Sorry for the delay in answering, everyone! The new posting time means that I can't check FS until after I'm home from work in the evening :(

The art is from the French comic book "Page Noire". I really recommend it -- the story is great, the characters amazing (with ripe ladyslash potential if that's your thing), and the art is really unique... See, depending on which protagonist is in focus, the style changes drastically (http://i56.tinypic.com/30sdet1.jpg). *coughs* I've been meaning to write a proper rec of this for ages, so sorry for going on and on!

I'm not sure if it's just the fandoms I'm in, but the Japanese fanartists tend to be more creative with poses and perspectives and angles used in their art; the Western fanartists tend to use much of the same.

Anytime they do try to do something out of the ordinary, there's always this awkwardness that is less prevalent in Japanese fanart. I think it might be due to a lack of familiarity with the art style or emulation of someone else's art style, rather than trying to build their own. I've noticed, however, that some Western fanartists who are not overly concerned with replicating the original anime/manga's art style can draw just as well or even better than a lot of Japanese fanartists.

... it might have something to do with the artists' expertise too and willingness to try something a little more complex than what they usually do.

And hey, I'll certainly admit that a lot of Japanese oekaki "rakugaki" are sketchy as anything and even your average Western fanart will probably be better.

I know a lot of fanartists who routinely take down their older art, and I can only presume it's because they're ashamed of it. ^^;

Oh, yes, and I've seen MORE than my fair share of truly unappealing Japanese fanart.

Those still tend to lack the awkwardness of the "hi, I'm just learning to draw 'anime' and I say that like it's a single art style, heehee" fanartists, but I have seen some truly ridiculous art styles. Like, heads a mile high, but ten times narrower than they are tall, with eyes that look like odd letter Ts, but with body's proportions much less exaggerated.

Or the pencil-thin styles. Or the glowy, giant pimple-esque knees/noses/cheeks/elbows of doom colouring/highlighting styles that I see other artists trying to emulate as well. I have NEVER liked that art style. So nasty.

I don't mind it so much if it's just on spots like the cheeks (some people have rosy cheeks) or the nose (tblood in paler-skinned folks tends to give the skin a redder colour there, especially in the cold), but on random spots? Like the forehead? Whyyy?! It looks like RIDICULOUSLY BAD ACNE. Or rosacea.

That road sounds quite reasonable to me seeing it in full.

In the same manner, I (a trans woman) met a friend who was trans through a video game, which later lead to my coming out and transitioning a number of years ago. The paths to opening up to ourselves can come in strange ways, but it's no less valid to be through fandom than through say meeting a friend who has some interest in gender issues in college, at work, in a bar, or so on.

Yeah, that's one of those really hard to find ones that isn't even on the website anymore. Like Chick Inc. disavowed any knowledge of it completely. There's another one about homosexuality that's similarly out of print and totally unavailable, and I really want it because there's a gay bar in it called GAY BAR and that is just awesome

I think more people probably do something like this than you realise. If you are a) aware of what you're doing (i.e. you don't *actually* think it's Jared Padalecki) and b) it makes you feel better then I don't think you should worry about it.

Oh god, I cannot watch Mr Bean. My aunt really likes it though so I will try this next time she has it on!
