I'm sorry. I kind of laughed at this.

Completely OT, but I love your icon. ;)

Understandable. "Lee" is just one of those surnames that can belong to more than one ethnic group. "Park" is another one that can be either English or Korean. "Soto" can be both Japanese and Spanish. And don't even try to figure out "Costello." I've met Irish "Costellos," Italian ones and Spanish ones.

It's an easy mistake.

When I was a kid, I worked in a 7/11 with a Korean kid with the same last name as my Irish ass, "Park".

He liked to tell people I was his sister, just to fuck with people.

Hey, it's boring in a 7/11...

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that might have been fun...

[identity profile] formula-410.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha. My last name is Laing, and people used to ask if I was Asian.... I don't know that I've ever actually met an Asian person with the name "Lang". (I've heard "Liang", though) In any case, "Laing" is Scottish...

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Much like Cohen (very Jewish or very Irish).

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
An Irish person with the last name Cohen? I'm sorry but if that is someone's last name they are some part Jewish! Maybe they are of a Jewish background, and raised in Ireland?

[identity profile] rose-papillon.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
That's amazing.

[identity profile] honestys-easy.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I always had the secret hope as a kid that he was Asian-American, and I just couldn't tell based on his appearance. (I also thought wrinkles could hide anything.) I think I just wanted a strong Asian-American figure--a real one, not a character--in one of my favorite fandoms.

I had also convinced myself that Jim Lee was actually Stan Lee's son, taking over the family business. (Which might be why I thought Stan was Asian...)

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, for the longest time I thought "Stan Lee" was "Stanley," so at least you weren't as misinformed as I was!

Appropriate icon is most appropriate.

Same here. I figured it out while watching Mallrats. XD

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Is is because of the name? well, obviously this is a pen name, but my r/l last name sounds asian (it mostly likely is, given my strange & diversely mixed gene cocktail); but I think some people are surprised when they actually see me. Especially since I'm not married and it can't be a spouse name...

[identity profile] zoey-says.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
I have the opposite going on. I look Asian, but my RL name is so very French. People who see my name first are always surprised when they meet me.
ext_19953: (introduce a little anarchy)

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's cute! :D I doubt he'd mind, anyway. He'd be like "S'OKAY, SPIDER-FRIEND!"

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm half Chinese and didn't realize that Lee wasn't an exclusively Chinese surname until I was 11.
I don't even remember who it was, but in class we watched a film with a black actor whose last name was Lee, and I was like, "I thought only Chinese people were named Lee!"

And then I was really confused because my full Chinese friend got pissy and told me "Sometimes, you can be SO RACIST." so I didn't know if like, this actor was adopted by a Chinese family, or if I had somehow stumbled upon something horrible I wasn't supposed to talk about. *shrug*
/cool story bro

Anyway, when someone finally pointed out Robert E. Lee, who I had known about before, I headdesked really hard. :|

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, so Robert E. Lee wasn't Korean either?

... Suddenly the Civil War is less confusing to me.
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (zomglolz x2)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
LOL
Well I can see how his pen name might cause people to be a bit confused about his ethnicity, especially if they've never seen a photo of him.

Anyway, this secret is awesome.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
LOL

Frankly I'm surprised you jumped into the conclusion of "Korean" when it could easily have been Chinese (and the fact that most foreigners are all "lolol Chinese" whenever they see any sort of Asian person)

[identity profile] zoey-says.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
This made me LOL

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I highly doubt he would've gotten near as far in his career in the 50s/60s had he been Korean. Just pointing that out.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
If it makes you feel better, OP, I once thought "Spike Lee" was Chinese.

[identity profile] angary.livejournal.com 2011-06-22 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
After a long and arduous process, the entire country has agreed upon forgiving you.
