LOL, I thought you were overreacting until I got to the part where the friend hasn't actually seen a 3D movie. That's just special. Reminds me of everyone who says they 'don't like' some kind of food, even though they've never tried it.

Oh god, so much this.

I don't think it's that unusual. Sometimes people who say "I don't like oysters" really mean "just the sight of them grosses me out so much that I've never been able to bring myself to even try them."

So it's not wrong for them to say that they don't like oysters: if they contemplated it seriously and found themselves disgusted to the point of actual nausea, then it's true. They really, really don't like oysters.

I suppose. I guess there's a difference between 'I don't like the taste of oysters' and 'I don't like the idea of oysters' - I tend to hear the former, but you're right, people could mean the latter.

It's definitely imprecise and misleading, but I think in a benign kind of way... people just don't want to have to go through the whole story, I think. Nor do they want people thrusting a plate of the the disliked food directly in their face. :)

I don't know...I can usually tell if I'm going to like a food just by looking at it and/or smelling it. It used to piss my grandma off to no end, because she would cook all sorts of strange foods and get annoyed that I didn't think I'd like it, even though I'd never tried it. But the few times I did try it, I didn't like it. Go figure. :)

Yeah, but insisting that you absolutely know you hate it and won't try it is some sort of weird control thing you have going on. Even if you're pretty sure, why not give it a try, you may be wrong! What's the worst that could happen? The only reason you have not to try it is just to exercise control - to be stubbornly invested in the IDEA you don't like it, instead of at least trying it and find out if the idea even matches the reality. Is being right really THAT important to you?

Besides, it's not always going to be grandma's weird cooking which you're always pretty sure you don't like. This attitude is going to severely stunt your palate and make you an absolute pain to go out eating with once you get older. It would do you good to let go of this intense need to be absolutely right about how you know ahead of time foods you do and don't like, otherwise it could be really bad on your social life. Going out to eat is a major part of human social interaction, and everyone hates having to cater to that person who only eats french fries and chicken fingers. I have friends like you and honestly, they eventually get culled out from our 'going out and having fun eating' adventures.
