LOL, I thought you were overreacting until I got to the part where the friend hasn't actually seen a 3D movie. That's just special. Reminds me of everyone who says they 'don't like' some kind of food, even though they've never tried it.

I'm honestly not a fan of 3D for most films. If the special effects are the main point - like Tron: Legacy, for instance - it's cool, but otherwise I tend to find it takes me out of the story (though I suspect it doesn't quite look the way it's supposed to for me). I realise I'm in the minority - I know lots of people find 3D a more immersive/entertaining experience. I'm glad there's the option to see films in 2D, though, because quite apart from anything else, I'm too cheap to watch stuff in 3D I'd enjoy at least as much in 2D :)

[identity profile] ldkirby.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I have your friend's exact reaction to 3D movies, but I've at least seen a few. (And was permanently scarred as a child by Shark Boy and Lava Girl, but that may have been for other reasons.)

[identity profile] rose-papillon.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. I can understand people disliking 3D, especially post-production 3D like the next Harry Potter film will be. If your friend doesn't want to try 3D, then just see it in 2D with them. No big deal, surely. If you really want to see it in 3D, perhaps you could go again another time without your friend?

[identity profile] nabradia.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Y'see, I hate 3D movies because I already wear glasses and, yes, wearing two pairs of glasses for the length of a movie gives me a headache.

(And no, I'm not going to get contact lenses just to watch a film.)

But your friend? Augh. I hate when people claim to hate things without trying them first. Try it, hate it, then complain. Don't skip the first step, it makes you look like an asshat.

As somebody who has skewed eyes and thus can't see in 3D anyway, I resent 3D film for the extra expense and the sheer pointlessness. If I watch 3D movies without glasses the interpolated images give me a headache; if I watch with, the cross-polarised light means that they're too dark.

So yeah. For people who get nothing from the 3D effects, 3D does indeed suck.

Are you sure they haven't, though? Not even a novelty 3D film at a theme park? A friend of mine has no depth perception nd he won't go see things in 3D because he literally cannot see it, it stays fuzzy, and it really sucks for him to pay for that. and sure, it's frustrating if we go see films together, but I don't think it makes you an awesome friend if you want to put people through something unpleasant.Maybe they DO get headaches.

Or maybe they're being dramatic, or scared of new technology, in which case you're right. But you know, they might be telling the truth?

+1

Really irritated at the massive 3-D hate which has sprung up recently by film purists.

I have a friend who claims she can't see 3-D movies, and I sympathize, but she acts like because she can't enjoy it, it simply shouldn't be shown. It's ridiculous.

I haven't seen a movie in 3D and I don't plan to.

When wandering around a store once, they had a monitor set up for 3D gaming so I tried it out. I couldn't handle 5 minutes of it, so I don't think I could handle 2 hours.

[identity profile] miff-falden.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I saw Half-Blood Prince in "3D". After about 15 minutes you're asked to take your glasses off and the rest of the film was in 2D. The 3D part was annoying though.

The best movie I've ever seen in 3D was Toy Story 3, and I couldn't tell the difference. That was the movie itself though. The short (Day and Night) was terrible because the 3D effect destroyed the "2D animated characters that are windows to another world" concept of the short, and I think I would have really enjoyed it if not for that.

I like 3D when it's not done to the extreme. James Cameron's Avatar in 3D gave me motion sickness while Coraline in 3D was completely awesome and drew me into the movie. I'm bummed because I really wanted to see How To Train Your Dragon in 3D and never got the chance. But, for the most part, I avoid 3D when I can.

But I agree that it's not fair of your friend judge without seeing even one 3D film.

Depending on one's personal circumstances with motion and vision (and/or glasses), you may not have to see new 3D to know you won't be able to tolerate it. I knew I wouldn't be able to handle "new" 3D because I can't handle any artificial 3D, and yup, it makes me feel ill and gives me a headache.

You also don't have to see it to know the stats on darkness/muddying. 3D movies are simply darker than regular movies, and converting a film that wasn't made in 3D is even worse. Plus, you know, the fact that it's just a cash-in and a way to increase revenue from flagging ticket sales. If someone likes it, more power to them and their $15 movie ticket, but I hate it when something I want to see is only playing in 3D when I have time to go.

I'm so excited that the 3D fad is dying. Financial backers are finally starting to notice that the vast majority of moviegoers at best resent 3D, and at worst actively loathe it. Theatre numbers are backing it up. Stock analysts are starting to advise clients to dump their RealD stock.

We're seeing HP at midnight, at a 2D showing. Our theatre sold out eight midnight 2D shows, but neither of their 2 midnight 3D showings has sold out yet.

It doesn't take a lot of exposure to 3D to get a headache if you're susceptible to them. A trailer or a theme park ride thing would do it, and your friend would probably not consider either of those as having gone to see a "movie", so cut them some slack.

I've had mixed luck with the technology. Some movies I can live with, others I've had to get up and leave (and very early in the film, too, which is worse than annoying at those prices.) I'd much rather have the option of 2D all the time.

[identity profile] eastcoastfilly.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
The last time I tried to see a movie in 3D, it didn't work for me. I wear glasses already because I'm nearsighted. I couldn't fit the 3D glasses over them, but if I tried to take my own glasses off, I couldn't see what was going on. As it is, it just didn't work either way (not sure if a lazy eye effects it or it it was something else).

I'm not sure how things work elsewhere, but if the smaller cinemas around here (don't have stadium-type seating or twenty-plus screens) get a movie that's available in 3D, that's the ONLY version there. So, if the 3D effects make your head spin? It just doesn't work for you? You don't want to pay more money for something you don't even want? You either go out of your way to find a bigger theater, make yourself sick for two or three hours, or don't get to see the movie until it's out on DVD. I just get annoyed when it's crammed down our throats when most movie-goers either don't like it or don't give a damn.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I have never seen a full-length movie in 3D, no. I have, however, seen 3D films at theme parks that use the same technology modern 3D movies use, and I usually end up having to take off the glasses or close my eyes even for those 10 minutes I'm in the damn theater. I definitely wouldn't be able to handle 90+ minutes of that without getting sick on someone.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen a movie in 3D, but that doesn't mean I've never seen anything in 3D before; I know it gives me a headache from the experiences I've had with it. I won't see a 3D movie because if 10 minutes irritates me, 2 hours will drive me insane.

I'm sure your friend trashing 3D may be annoying, but the conclusion your drawing isn't any better.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Unlike your friend, I've seen movies in 3-D and just not been impressed, but after reading this article, I feel like stirring up a pitchfork armed mob and storming some studios.

The only time I thought 3D was done well was in Coraline. The other times I've seen 3D in a theater, it was just unnecessary.

[identity profile] tee-sama.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
I have seen only one movie in and that had like 5 minutes of 3D scenes only and yet I had horrible headache.

Sorry, I'm not gonna waste my time, money on something that gives me pain. And most people I know who are against 3D feel the same way. Those who haven't seen anything in 3D yet don't want to because of the cost. So I'm with your friend. :P

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't think movie technology has come far enough to make 3D movies actually look good. Occasionally, they do. But it's very, very rare.

Maybe in a few years time we'll actually be able to watch movies without having to wear those stupid glasses. And maybe one day 3D will stop looking murky and blurry instead of awesome and 3D.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
Damn, a lot of comments!

I agree that a lot of movies don't have to be in 3D, and that it sucks when you can only watch movies in 3D. People should be able to watch movies however they want to, obviously. That said, I like 3D, but not in every movie. Thor and Pirates 4 could have done without it, but movies like Shrek 4 or Tron looks great in 3D.

As for my friend, I went to a 3D movie with her boyfriend (but not her), and later when I asked her if she wanted to see one, she said she didn't want to because her boyfriend said 3D wasn't any good. And now it has turned into "3D sucks, it gives me a headache". It's not just that she doesn't want to watch them (I mean, that I don't really care about), it's that she goes out of her way to bash 3D movies all the time.
