There's not a whole lot to understand: a bunch of yaoi fangirls got excited over the idea of Cid and Vincent shagging, pulled very rare instances from the original game where the two acknowledged each other's existence as "evidence", and built an entire ship out of a few scraps of wood.

Bam! Valenwind was born, and many terrible fanfics followed.

I first played the game way back in my own "TWO MEN IN A SCENE, MUST BE FUCKING" phase and I couldn't even ship it then. Where the hell's the chemistry between them? Also I just don't like Vincent, so that could have a lot to do with why I don't get them together. /coolstorybro

"Valenwind" as a ship name is just atrocious though. Ugh. D:

Yeeeah. I think it's the whole "aggressive top and submissive bottom" trope that's popular in slash fandom at large (personally, I have a difficult time picturing Vincent in any kind of sexual situation, but that's another discussion altogether) that makes Cid/Vincent popular. Cid is muscular, aggressive, and has a mouth on him, while Vincent is more reserved, skinnier, paler, and has long bishie hair. It doesn't matter that they hardly interact and have zero chemistry, it's all about who looks good together fucking... which is fine to get your rocks off, but don't get blindly loyal to it and become an annoying fangirl. :|
