I hate Dirge of Cerberus (although I love some of the characters in it), but it made me ship it, too. There is nothing wrong with only starting to ship a pairing after they get more than about two lines of interaction.

Naaaw. Cid and Vincent's interactions in DoC were so adorable. It always bugged me that Vincent was largely ignored in FFVII. I know he was pretty quiet and kept to himself, but he always seemed to out of place in the group. So it made me far happier than it should have that Cid really seemed to care about him.

He was mostly ignored because he was an optional character, and it was hard to integrate him fully without it seeming weird, I'm guessing.

I'm sure I've seen this secret before.

I don't think I'll ever understand this pairing.

There's not a whole lot to understand: a bunch of yaoi fangirls got excited over the idea of Cid and Vincent shagging, pulled very rare instances from the original game where the two acknowledged each other's existence as "evidence", and built an entire ship out of a few scraps of wood.

Bam! Valenwind was born, and many terrible fanfics followed.

oh god I bought DoC for the sole purpose of digging up some Yuffie/Vincent subtext that I sorely needed. It's always been my FF7 otp.

I think you're forgetting the classic "Hit the brakes, Chief." line from the original game. :D

When I was ten, I assumed that this line meant that were actually a couple in canon.

So when I was playing FF7, I renamed all of the characters after comic book heroes I liked. However, when I got to Cid, I couldn't bear to rename him because... he's Cid! You can't have Final Fantasy without a Cid! So I just tweaked it a little and named him "Cid, baby".

So when he introduced himself it was with a giant leap and then "I'm Cid, baby!" which was sort of hilarious, it looked like he was addressing Tifa and might as well have called her 'toots'. I grinned.

And then this scene came along. XD

Because it's more appealing and/or interesting that way to the people who ship them. But no one said that every pair of dudefriends are fucking each other.
