IDK, for me it's a question of ease. If I search for fanart (for a japanese show/manga) on the popular section of DA I get 70% percent decent stuff, 20% good stuff and 10% awesome stuff. Whereas in Pixiv I find one good thing, fave it and tag it properly and BAM, I just go back to the tag in the favorites and get ALL THE AWESOME STUFF for that tag. If not the style, there are a lot more different concepts and ideas than what I see everywhere. There are awesome western artists, sure, but still.

Well, I'm with you in that pixiv is a better-designed site than deviantart, but I don't think the artists are collectively better as a whole than the ones on DA.

Also, doesn't OP realize that ANYONE can make a pixiv account? It's not hard, I did it. Just use some online translator to translate the Japanese to English on the registration page.

Collectively? Nah, it's true that there is talent on both sides, but making the good artists easier to find probably skews perception. Also, what I think is that it depends on the fandom- some of them are just more popular in Japan, so I can safely say there's more quality in Japanese Shaman King fanart than Western, but would say other fandoms are about equal in quality.

And lol yeah. I've stumbled upon popular DA artist on Pixiv too. OP can knock themselves out pretending to be Japanase if they really want.
