Yeah, because every single one of those thousands of sailors and soldiers and deckhands not only pushed the buttons to launch the missiles, they also were totally aware of the situation and its ramifications. And so were all the other humans Erik plans to go off and kill! It's so obviously comparable to the murder of unarmed Jewish civilians by their own government. He's totally justified!

I agree with you that Erik is far more sympathetic than Charles in First Class but Jesusfuckingchrist yes, turning the missiles on those people, that makes you a bad person.

**edit**
On second thought, I'll just post it as my own comment.

You know shit. If you go into something, knowing that you'll in all likelihood be taking lives, without first acquainting yourself very thoroughly with that exactly you'll be doing, you're NOT INNOCENT.
Are you as bad as the people who consciously go into it?
Maybe not. Maybe you're worse. It doesn't matter. You've crossed the line - once you've shown you don't consider it a moral obligation to think long and hard before killing someone, killing you without batting an eye is just playing by your own rules.

When people you know are butchered by people ~just taking orders, then talk about how innocent the bucherers were because they weren't "totally aware of the situation and its ramifications".

People who are neither aware of a crime nor capable of stopping it if they had been aware do not deserve to be punished with the perpetrators.

I'm sorry for your loss, but we're clearly not talking about the same scenario here.

turning the missiles on those people, that makes you a bad person.

This is the scenario you were talking about that I responded to. I should've been clearer. Those soldiers were perpetrators of the killing. Maybe they weren't able to stop it, but that doesn't mean it was a-ok to go and participate in it.

Magneto wanting to annihilate the entire human species is not what I'm talking about. (obviously, many humans were innocent. All the children for one.)

So you consider all people in the armed forces immoral and guilty by definition. But I'm not so sure Magneto would share that view since I'm not sure he's anti-military in general. In the comics did he ever serve in an army? Like the Israeli one?

The reason the phrase became so loaded was that it became associated with people who were lying about just following orders when they were actually enthusiastically supporting a policy they fully understood on some level, a policy that didn't have anything to do with self-defense either. (The people on the ships who do know the circumstances basically have the same policy as Erik of kill them before they kill you.)

IMO, if you're willing to go to war, then you have to accept that people might fight back.

Battleships are designed to kill people. If you help keep one running, then implicitly you are accepting partial responsibility for any deaths you may help to bring about. If you put yourself in a situation where you are assisting with bringing about the deaths of other people, you are not 'innocent' and you must also accept the risk of retaliation.

I may think that allowing the missiles to explode in mid air would have been the most morally acceptable choice in that situation, but that doesn't mean that what Erik did wasn't self defence.

Like you say, Erik was perfectly capable of stopping the attack without killing his attackers. Even in war, killing soldiers to excess without any purpose, or killing prisoners of war who can't harm you, would be considered an atrocity. What Erik wanted to do was not an act of defense at all, it was a brutal slaughter designed to catalyse a war between two groups of people.
