[X-Men: First Class]

Since this is yet another secret about this.

JESUS COME ON. It's not supposed to be a good/bad divide.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
charles has always been just as ~morally gray~ as erik imho. they both do fucked up shit, but i can see things from both of their perspectives (i'm with you though, i would side with magneto for sure).

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
*HUGS ANON* I don't necessarily agree but I can empathize with you.

[identity profile] margerydaw-s2.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
No, I wouldn't say you are the bad guy. It's really not about that, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
How can anyone still think of Charles and Erik in terms of "good" and "evil" is beyond me.
And no offence, OP, but it's silly how people are going "OMG, I'd have totally chosen Erik's side, what does that say about me?", seeing as the whole movie was engineered to make you understand Erik's point of view and sympathize with him.

I agree completely. But, I would not claim it to be the moral choice, just the choice that I would make. If someone hurt my mother I would hunt them down across the seven seas and kill them slowly. But...I acknowledge that this would make me a criminal, too, and that justice and fairness are not the same things.

But as stated above, both Charles and Erik have their reason, that stem from their background, and they're both morally grey.

Both characters aren't about 'good' or 'evil'. They are grey characters. I can see both sides, and while I personally agree with Xavier's philosophy of 'find a peaceful coexistence,' I also understand how easily Erik's can be seen as right. That's really the whole point. It's not about choosing between the good guys and the bad guys. It's about how both sides can be right and wrong at the same time.

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
As everybody keeps saying, the movie doesn't lay anything out as good/evil.

Kind of interesting though that your secret is about how you would turn weapons on people who are trying to kill you, etc., then seem to judge harshly not only the people ordering the soldiers to fire at the end (who are afraid of being wiped out by mutants) but the soldiers who don't know the big picture before they follow orders. If you followed Magneto you'd be expected to do pretty much what they are doing.

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
No one said Erik was wrong...

Part of what makes him an interesting villain is that he's so sympathetic.

Even if the Jewish thing is all Brian Singer...

... yeah, same arguments as before. Neither Charles or Erik are totally in the right or wrong. They're both grey characters and it's OKAY to sympathise with Erik.

Five bucks says we get another secret like this again tomorrow.

It's not really about his revenge, it's about what he did after. He admitted he is a fascist like Shaw was. If you agree with him on THAT, yeah, I kind of think you are a bad person. Sorry.

[identity profile] oaktree89.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't the whole point the moral ambiguity?

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, not really. Neither of them were really 100% good, nor 100% bad. Erik gets a bit, er, extreme later on, but I definitely think we were meant to see both of their points of view.

[identity profile] bloodrivendream.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Originally Charles is the good guy and Erik the villain.
However, I think in X-Men: First Class they intentionally tried to eliminate that. Erik wasn't the villain here. It was deliberately shown that both Charles and Erik were partially wrong and partially right.

None of that is where he's wrong
it's in the fact that his reaction to that is WE SHOULD KILL ALL THE HUMANS.

anyway, you're meant to see the povs of both Charles and Erik. The movie did this INSANELY well.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
okay didn't every single one of us feel this way after the movie. Even us lifelong Xavier-loyal peaceniks? Charles was just so naive and frustrating in this one. And Erik was just so sympathetic. And hot.

But yea, another reason to Make Mine Marvel. We have actual antiheroes. Or antivillains, depending on how you look at it.

Hear hear

[identity profile] no-one-specific.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't say anything about you. In the real world, things are not as black and white as they are in the movies and fandom and such. It's a million shades of grey. I don't really know this particular movie too well, but reading the secret, what he did was built off of a justified rage. Put in a situation like that, that no person should ever have to experience, changes you, and changes that way you'd see things. Being able to identify with that shows that the writers did a good job, and you are intelligent enough to see that even though it might not be the right thing, there are still shades of grey. The fact that you know that it might not be right just says that you have a conscious and can see that revenge and killing is bad. None of this is a bad thing; you're just aware.

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
It's supposed to be morally gray and Magneto is an intentionally sympathetic villain. Also, I almost wonder if Magneto is supposed to be more sympathetic than Xavier because he kind of is (this includes old and young versions).

[identity profile] famine.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Once again everyone is focusing on the divide between Charles and Erik while not focusing on the divide between those American/Russian soldiers and those who participated in Nazi atrocities. There are similarities but the situation is NOT the same and THAT'S why Erik is on the wrong side of the moral grey area.

Yeah, because every single one of those thousands of sailors and soldiers and deckhands not only pushed the buttons to launch the missiles, they also were totally aware of the situation and its ramifications. And so were all the other humans Erik plans to go off and kill! It's so obviously comparable to the murder of unarmed Jewish civilians by their own government. He's totally justified!

I agree with you that Erik is far more sympathetic than Charles in First Class but Jesusfuckingchrist yes, turning the missiles on those people, that makes you a bad person.

Look, I don't think Charles was perfect, but from what I saw Erik was definitely more in the wrong. That he later came to embrace the same ideology that the nazis did sealed the deal for me as he's NOT a good guy.

I don't know what this means for you. Life /=/ a freakin' movie, if that helps.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Believing that 'just following orders' is an insufficient reason to justify killing those who have just saved your life = reasonable.

Believing that that wrong justifies the murder of hundreds if not a thousand men, regardless of their levels of guilt or innocent = not reasonable.

I take it OP is not actually a mass murderer and is just expressing anger towards those who would do such a reprehensible thing, which is fine. He should have been angry, he even should have used the missiles to scare the living daylights out of those sailors, but lives are precious regardless of levels of superpower.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That is sort of the point. Erik is a very, very sympathetic character who is only villainous because he also insists that mutants are superior to humans and tries to kill humans. Charles on the other hand has lots of problems and issues and is often hypocritical and unfair, but he's heroic because he wants humans and mutants to get along and refuses to believe humans are scum who should be killed. Neither of them is a full-out hero or villain.
