Read some Shakespeare? Half his plays involve crossdressing.

A Song of Ice and Fire series also has a crossdressing character.

Ah... Hm. I know more anime with gender-bending/crossdressing elements than books. You've apparently already read the Tamir trilogy, and that's always the best I can recommend. Hopefully others here can give you more rec's.

Watch Young Americans!

It's old and tiny, but it has The L Word's Shane as a girl who joins a boys academy to get attention from her mother (who doesn't notice). It's one of those works that makes you ache because it isn't around and there isn't a fandom. (Or at least, it is for me.)

And I like gender-bending stories too. I'm free-er about it though, if anyone asks and won't believe I just like them I say I think androgyny is beautiful.

As mentioned above, a lot of Shakespeare involves crossdressing. Plus, Shakespeare in Love has a bit of it.

Have you read Bloody Jack by L. A. Meyer? Or Mairelon the Magician by Patricia Wrede?

I recommend Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett. It is a brilliant deconstruction of this trope, besides which it is exciting and funny.

omg The Tamir Trilogy is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE BOOK SERIES. I re-read it like, once a year, and I don't even even care. :DDD It's one of those series' that I grew up with.

Oh I love me some Sweet Polly Oliver :D

[identity profile] dragonalchemist.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Privilege of the Sword by Ellen Kushner. All about a girl who dresses like a boy because her uncle makes her, only she actually kinda likes it at the end.

[identity profile] empath-eia.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I really enjoy this theme, too.

Tanith Lee's Biting the Sun has tonnes of it. If you like manga at all, Angel Sanctuary has even more. I know I have a bunch more to recommend, but I just woke up and can't for the life of me get my brain to work.

[identity profile] mrtoulouse.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm definitely here to scope out the suggestions, but I also have a few of my own. Off the top of my head there's Leviathan and Behemoth by Scott Westerfield, and Susan Price's Pagan Mars Trilogy has some, too.

READ LEVIATHAN BY SCOTT WESTERFIELD (and the sequel/soon-to-drop threequel)

first steampunk novel I've ever loved, a weird amazing WW1-AU, and it's got an INSANELY BADASS GIRL doing the full Mulan. \m/ also, the Game of Thrones books, it takes awhile but totally happens. and yeah, dig ye some Shakespeare.

I don't know what type of genderbending or crossdressing you're looking for but as for movies..."All the Queen's Men" "Shakespeare in Love" "Rocky Horror Picture Show" "Breakfast on Pluto" and "To Wong Foo: Thanks for Everything" are great movies. Never saw "Ed Wood" or "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" but they could be relevant to your interests also.

As for books, hmmm...I agree that there are a lot of Shakespeare's plays that involve cross dressing. Also the play "M. Butterfly" is a tragic story involving a Chinese male to female cross-dresser (a member of the Beijing Opera) and their romance with a man who works for the French embassy...there was also a movie adaptation of this starring Jeremy Irons. If I think of anything else, I'll post it! Hope this helps a little.

I remember liking The Minstrel's Tale by Berit Haahr a lot when I was younger. Also unique in that it's about a girl running off to be a musician.

can. can i just mention how happy i was to see a secret that referenced the tamir trilogy? i often feel like i'm the only person in the world who has ever read those books. and i love them so, so much.

Like everyone else has said, Shakespeare!

If you like anime/manga (or asian dramas).... there are like a milllionnnnn (mostly set in the present day). Hana-Kimi and Ouran High School Host Club are two of the most well known.

here's a list of asian dramas that have "gender bender" themes, I haven't seen enough to recommend any though: http://www.squidoo.com/gender-bender-dramas

Someone else can probably recommend a lot more, but that's a good starting point...? But most are more comedy/romance stories.

If transfic fits your definition of "gender-bending", I recommend the transfic masterlist.

Try Victoria Flanagan's 'Into the Closet' — it's an academic work but she analyses a good range of texts.

[identity profile] bramble-patch.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with a couple of folks upthread - if you have not read Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett, do so now. Right now. We'll wait.

(and just as a word of caution, I don't know if you're inclined to looking up fanart/fic on books, but if you are... for the love of god, read MR before you look for fanart. There are several major twists which every MR fanart I have ever seen spoils.)

[identity profile] false-alexis.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I came to mention 'Eon' by Alison Goodman, but now I guess I better just second it? Also, yes, 'Leviathan' and 'Behemoth' by Scott Westerfeld, and 'Privilege of the Sword' by Ellen Kushner- mentioned upthread, but deserve a second naming, since they are all lovely books. I think that 'Princess Ben' deserves a mention, too, though it isn't nearly as major a plot-point there as in most of the other books.

For things that aren't books, I'm useless. Sorry OP.

Hey OP,

I was pretty excited to see a secret about Mulan and Alanna, but I was delighted when I scrolled down further and you have the Tamir Triad in the secret.

My favourite Disney movie.
My favourite childhood series
and my favourite adulthood series/author.

<3 for you OP! (and other's who know it!)

n!s I don't crossdress or have any kind of gender confusion, I just find all three of those really enjoyable to read.

[identity profile] spider-rogue.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
If you want something pretty light but actually historically based, try Riding Freedom by Pam Muñoz Ryan. This book is fairly obscure and technically in the childrens' section, but it was my favorite when I was 9 and worth a read, I think. It's about a woman who dressed as a man in order to get a job driving stagecoaches, and hardly anybody knew about her secret until after her death. :D

[identity profile] pinnipedia.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Lots of good books have been recced above as well as a few that I'll have to check out. I also recommend 'Seven Daughters and Seven Sons' by Barbara Cohen and Bahija Lovejoy.

OT

Am I the only one who's a little weirded out by how Mulan's jaw magically becomes more square when she cross-dresses? It's not so bad when you watch the movie, but that DVD case...
