As an equal-opportunity shipper, I can't help but believe that anyone who hates and loathes all slash fans but doesn't equally hate all het fans isn't a bit homophobic; both are an equal amount of obnoxious and annoying.

So all the girl-bashing and 'ewww slash' bullshit from the het side doesn't bother you, but the slash-goggles do?

(Anonymous) 2011-07-04 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
MTE. If all slash fans magically disappeared, ship wars, wank, bitching, character-bashing, obsessive squeeing, shipping characters who have never interacted ever, and never shutting up about their fucking ship would all continue.

It just wouldn't be gay, which seems to be OP's problem with it.

Um....

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
How does someone girl bash in het fic?

Re: Um....

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen girls bashed left, right and center in het fic when they weren't the _true love_ in the main pairing. It happens in slash too, but it's hardly exclusive to one type of fic over the other.

Re: Um....

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
DA, but I think they're referring to the bashing of girls that are viewed as competition for the shipper's OP, which I've seen a lot among het shippers in various fandoms. Like the way a Hermione/Harry fic might feature Luna bashing.

Re: Um....

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well, duh. If there's even the slightest hint of a ~love triangle~ (and even when there isn't) fans of one faction will happily bash the character championed by the other faction, and vice versa! In my experience, female characters are more often bashed for getting in the way of other het ships than of slash ships. Why? Because every faction wants their pairing to be ~canon~ and most of the time slash fans know and accept that it's never gonna happen for them.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
In the fandom I follow, the female character of the canon het pairing is bashed by both OC het shippers and slash shippers, though I tend to see more bashing by the slashers than the OCers.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Fandoms with a heavy emphasis on OC shipping are places I steer clear of on principle. Nothing good can come of that.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
*is impressed* damn, you got some serious air on that point sailing right over your head.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh come, no need to be sarcastic. I'm not saying you're not right, I just think that since I wouldn't want to be in those fandoms to begin with, I'm not surprised they're not fun places to be.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Though, just to clarify, by OC you do mean "original character", right?

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I did mean Original Character, but it's kind of hard to avoid in the few places where fanfiction and fanart are posted for this fandom. There are a lot of fans of the series who adore the male lead and can't stand that he was actually paired up with a female character, much less the one it was very obvious he was going to wind up with to anyone with any knowledge of how storytelling works. The absolute shock at the end of the series that the creator went "that way" was amazing, considering it was right there in front of their eyes for the entire series - both regarding the ones who wanted him to remain single and those who wanted him with one of two other male leads.

Just because one person supports a het pairing doesn't means they can be just as misogynistic. I've been in fandoms where the girl that 'threatened' to break their pairing is trashed to the ground or why she is such a bitch/wimp/girly/boyish for the guy character. Sometimes they degraded a female character to the point she's OOC to fit that "perfect woman" ideal and becomes an object for the guy character to win over. In fact, a lot of people tend to overlook that most of the notable shipwars tend to come from het fandoms.

But misogyny stand out because of the two guys but both fandom are just as misogynistic although most of their fans from both fandoms aren't.

Oh my god yes. Definitely the first things that come to mind when I hear about 'shipwars'.

Imagine my heart was completely shattered when there was IchiRuki and IchiHime shipwars... when they consider the other as friends in canon and god knows how rare to get a moment like that in shounen where it's not over a guy.

Re: Um....

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Preach. I mean, geez, what do you immediately think of when someone mentions 'shipwar'? Me, it's Harmonians, it's Zutara vs. Kataang, it's... yeah, IchiRuki vs IchiHime.

Yep. As someone said upthread, this is because there are often canon het love triangles where there is actually a chance one side will "win" and the other will "lose," so there's more at stake in people's minds. I mean, there are some slash ship wars, but I never seen any that touch the crazy that I've seen come out of canon love triangles (or perceived canon love triangles *cough Harry/Hermione cough*).

I'm sorry, I know you mean this seriously, but I laughed so hard I choked. You MUST be new. And it's not just het either, I've seen girlbashing in femslash.

Strawberry Panic is a great place to start.

Seriously, do you live under a rock? Aeris vs Tifa, Zurata fans bashing Mai, anything Harmoanians have ever said about Ginny Weasly, that's the big three I can think of and I'm sure there is much more. Try looking up "Die for our ship" on TV tropes.

Girls get bashed constantly in fandom in general. I don't see why them getting bashed in het fic would be unusual.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with this to a point, especially if it's hatred and loathing...but some of us just aren't into slash. It doesn't mean we're homophobic, it just means that we prefer to read stuff that we can maybe picture ourselves in or whatever. And since almost every fandom is dominated by slash, it can be difficult to find fic for people who aren't into slash. I doubt the OP really hates slash or all slash fans, but I can definitely identify with the frustration of not being able to find many good fics for het people, because most of the best writers in fandom are into slash only.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-06 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
I was with you until you implied that slash is some place free of misogyny. I've encountered a lot more misogyny in slash circles than in het circles.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-06 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that it was implied at all. They just meant that het isn't free of misogny either, a point which has been covered elsewhere in the thread. Misogyny can be found in all areas of fandom, just like in life.
