The accent would definitely change, though, I would think. And to be honest it bothers me too, but I guess it's an obvious way to establish which "person" we're actually dealing with.

I think the same magic that made them switch bodies probably takes care of that..

It really bugs me, too, which is why I love the Jackie Chan Adventures episode in which the characters trade chi with each other and pick up each other's accents and speech patterns but still talk in the body's voice. It's not a body swap exactly, but close enough.

This bugs me too, accent and speech patterns should change, maybe timbre, but not entire voice. It really, really bugs me as it is just lazy story-telling.

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That episode of Futurama where they keep switching bodies with each other? OH MAN. Really irritated me that they kept their own voices. And they did it again when all the girls turned into guys and the guys turned into girls. The voices would CHANGE! And as nerdy and sciencey as the Futurama writers are, I'd think they would realize that. But apparently not. >:(

[identity profile] aethre.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha that's only the tip of the iceberg for my body swap complaints - I definitely over think this one. Don't you think that suddenly growing (or shrinking) several inches would screw up someone's movements? I know that I got super clumsy during puberty and that wasn't as dramatic or immediate of a change.

I could go on, but that would be effort and stuff.

It bothers me as well.

[identity profile] masterfedora.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I never thought about this much but yeah you're right. I suppose it's just done cause it's easier.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Narrative shorthand.

[identity profile] les-lenne.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Strangely enough, if the character is magically/scientifically de-aged or turned older, or if we see a flashback/glance into the future, they will get a different voice (actor). It's not like the producers don't realize how vocal cords work, they just choose to ignore the mechanics whenever they want to.

And I hate that about body-switch scenes.

Chances are, if no one comments on a voice switch, they switch voices, too, and only we hear the voice switch so we can keep things straight more easily.

[identity profile] blackjackrocket.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, that pisses me off so much. The vocal cords are part of the body!

I really loved when DBZ Abridged did it right (I...admittedly haven't seen the corresponding DBZ episodes so I don't know how they did it).

I honestly don't think it's meant to be indicative of their voices staying the same so much as to help the audience identify who is who.

[identity profile] errancies.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
That's always bothered me too!

That's one of the reasons I love the Justice League episode "The Great Brain Robbery" so much. When Luthor and Flash switch bodies, their voices stay the same and it ended up being hilarious hearing Luthor's voice saying things like this:

Lex Luthor: My fellow bad guys, I, Lex Luthor, your leader, will speak now about my, Lex Luthor's, plan. My villainous, villainous plan. Question the plan at your peril.

Lex Luthor: Uh... any questions?
Other Villain: We all get a cut, right?
Lex Luthor: Watch your step, my evil minion. You presume too much. One of these days, you'll go too far.

Clancy Brown really did a great job with the whole episode

In my fandom, Bob possesses Adam's body and starts speaking in Bob's voice, but Craig is clueless about it, implying it's just being done for the audience's benefit and in the actual story Adam is still speaking with Adam's voice. Then the sequel comes out and confirms this by having Bob, in Adam's body, speaking with Adam's voice.

The only problem with that is that Adam speaks with an American accent and Bob with a British one, and in the sequel, Bob-possessing-Adam also speaks in Adam's accent (although Bob's crazy flamboyant speech pattern stays). He probably lost his accent at some point in the interim.

[identity profile] brandiweed.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, it's an old "simplified for kids" thing. You can read all about it here. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VoicesAreMental) (warning: TVTropes link)

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Normally, I think they only change the voices for the audience's perspective-- hence why the others around them tend to not notice.

In more creative and intelligent shows (Stargate SG-1 comes to mind), actors do pull it off in the way you describe.

[identity profile] caffeine-buzz.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It never really bothers me when the voices don't change but I do think it tends to be funnier when they do. Farscape's body switch episode was hilarious and part of the fun was watching the cast doing an awesome job imitating each other, mannerisms and all.

Yesss, thank you. As a huge bodyswap fan, this annoys the heck out of me. It does not make any sense. :|

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends on the reason they switch/what medium it is, but in general I prefer when the voice is the same, but maybe stressed in a different way for whoever is controlling the body.

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-07-11 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I dislike it because it's usually such a cheap, overused trope.

[identity profile] formula-410.livejournal.com 2011-07-11 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I generally find it funnier when the sound of the voice stays the same and the speech patterns change, anyway. The contrast is amusing. (Farscape, Jackie Chan Adventures, as some have mentioned)

[identity profile] angary.livejournal.com 2011-07-11 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
They didn't switch voices in Buffy! And they didn't do it in Angel either :D

[identity profile] bip-bebop.livejournal.com 2011-07-11 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
The best example of this I've ever seen was in the Revolutionary Girl Utena dub, of all things. The VAs clearly hung out with each other and spoke like the characters so they could get the tones right, even if the quality of the acting wasn't the greatest. It warmed by heart back in the day.

For me, though, the worst thing is when males and females switch bodies and they act like nothing's different. Umm, you have to pee differently? Wouldn't that be something to explore? Which is why I love the "Your & My Secret" manga--they aren't afraid to explore questions like "what if a boy is put in a girl's body when she's having her period?" and "if you suddenly had a penis where there wasn't one before, wouldn't you want to use it?" and even "how does a pig like her stay so thin?" [spoiler: POOP.] I love that series. *points to icon*
