She also got to touch tongues with Harry "Loin-Lord" Potter.

Now THAT is a crime that's inexcusable. Please see Ginny Weasley's treatment in fandom as proof.

IKR? Heaven forbid!

(Anonymous) 2011-07-13 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
But... what if you like Cho but hate Ginny?

(I honestly sympathsised with Cho and felt that Ginny went from a shy cute girl with a crush to a little snot whose 'development' didn't seem very natural to me at all anyway. And I used to ship H/G before book 6. )

I can't understand the Cho-hate either. But I've notices that HP fandom doesn't apply the same rules for all the characters. If Cho or Draco cry, they're whiny. If Hermione or Harry cry, it's because they have a good, logical reason.

I guess some people hate Cho because she was messing with their OTP? Don`t know, but I like her just because she's a Ravenclaw XD

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I really, sincerely like Cho Chang. I don't think she's all that interesting, but she went through a lot, and hey, I'm loyal to my Ravenclaws. Never understood the hate :/

SO. MUCH. THIS.

Fandoms treatment of Cho was absolutely horrible, and it wasn't much better to any other female character who might have so much as glanced at Harry.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-13 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I love your choice of icon for this reply :D

(Anonymous) 2011-07-13 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Idk, man. I think it really depends on timing. I haven't read OOTP in a long time, but wasn't it mid-late in the school when that particular scene happened? If it was then, wasn't it something like a year after her bf died? If that's the case then...yeah. It's not really good/heathy that she's still breaking down crying at the thought of him. I'm not saying that she wouldn't be over it, or that she should be ready to date anyone else but...if your still breaking down crying a year later? Yeah, you might to get help for it because you don't seem to be moving on.

Granted, if I'm remembering it wrong and it wasn't that long after then...wtf people?

[identity profile] avalon-usagi.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I think it was more like half a year. And Harry is the first boy that she took interest in after Cedric's death, so it makes sense that it would bring up lots of bad feelings (mostly guilt, I'd imagine).

I don't think it was that long. And I think the circumstances made it worse. Getting over someone's death is one thing, but getting over a murder when everyone around you is calling it an accident...

I could have written this secret! Cho is one of my favourite characters and I think some of her best qualities are glossed over both in the book and in fandom, which is sad. Of course she's going to cry - I think it's a really realistic and human reaction, one of the few we get to see in people other than Harry. (Seriously - of the ten or so important deaths in the last book, we only see an extended reaction to Dobby's, and even then it's mostly Harry's reaction.)

More importantly, I feel like Cho's awesome loyalty is downplayed. I loved that at the end of the fifth book she stayed friends with Marietta because Marietta was fifteen and probably extremely confused and had just been scarred for life and I think it's a pretty cool thing for at least one person to say (in not so many words) "no, Harry Potter, fuck you, I'm staying here with my friend whom your best friend hexed" because god knows having Cho turn her back would have been the last thing Marietta needed just then. It always bugged me that the books showed that as more a bad thing than an awesome thing.

Wow, essay. Basically: this is a good secret.

This, so much. Her boyfriend was murdered, the world she grew up in was telling her it never happened, there was this other guy she liked who was there during the murder and uncomfortable even talking about it... what did they expect her to do?

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you, OP. Cho's reactions struck me as realistic.

[identity profile] redonthefly.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Not to mention that fact that she's freaking 15, and all teenagers are just awesome about containing their emotions, justified or not.

Which, for the record, I'd say Cho was pretty damned justified.

[identity profile] formula-410.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
You make an excellent point, and one I didn't consider. I was never a Cho hater, but I did look a bit less favorably on her after OOTP, mostly because I felt like her relationship with Harry was a little weird. Still, given what you and some other commenters have said I'd say she's pretty alright :)
ext_19953: (marauders ride again!!)

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
aw, I feel this. The whole Harry/Cho dating sequence was really really awkward, and that sucks, but I wouldn't HATE her for it. It made sense.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-13 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Personally I like her because she stood by her best friend. [Yes, Marietta made a mistake but...jfc. That jinx, or at least refusing to take it off once they knew who it was, was a bit much - particularly when you consider how much it seemed to effect her mentally.]

Though, I admit I was a little annoyed with crying. Not because I thought it was unrealistic, or it was 'wrong' for her to cry. It made sense. I...just tend to annoyed with crying in general.

Cho's one of my favorite minor characters in the series for reasons more articulately stated in this thread. Don't be ashamed of liking her!

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Personally, while Cho was never my favorite character, I never held anything against her. Like others said, she was doing her best to move on with Cedric's death. She was still going to classes, still doing her best in Quidditch, etc. But she wasn't able to concentrate fully, leading to her apparently almost being thrown off the team, and she probably couldn't really concentrate on classes, either. And then she was interested in Harry, which probably made her wonder if Cedric would see it as a betrayal . . . hell, let's put it this way: I thought Cho handled things a lot better than, say, Bella Swan did in New Moon, and Edward didn't even die. (inb4 "Robert Pattinson played them both lol!")

But moving on, what I find interesting is that the people I've seen hate on Cho the most are the Harry/Ginny shippers -- even BEFORE Harry/Ginny became canon in book six. For instance, I know a girl who always makes sure to show the deepest disgust for Cho Chang, and yet, she's a devoted Harry/Ginny shipper who won't hear a word against it. (Granted, she also believes that Remus/Sirius was canon, yet shows explicit distaste in my Harry/Ron/Hermione OT3, so whatever.) Obviously, this doesn't represent ALL Harry/Ginny shippers, but they're the ones I see hating on Cho the most. Sort of a Die For Our Ship thing. =/

Either way, Cho is awesome. Rock on, OP.

[identity profile] runonmoonlight.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
I can't stand the "you are crying and thus annoying and childish" attitude some people have (I've had it thrown in my face before). Especially when it's something as big as what Cho went through. Some people don't cry as much, but some people have an uncontrollable connection with the amygdala and they just cannot help it. As long as it is just crying, and being upset, and not throwing a hissy fit, I do not see the problem!

Anyways. Yes. Cho is a-okay :D I'm not heavy into the books, but I don't remember ever having any hard feelings towards her.

[identity profile] novemberxi.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, well it wasn't just because she was crying but she was irrationally jealous of Hermione. I don't think jealously looks good on anyone.

Other than that I loved her because she was in Ravenclaw and she was adorable in the movies, but I can understand why people don't like her over-emotional outbursts in the books. I know it must have been tough for her to lose her previous boyfriend that way but she was all "I thought you would understand?" and "Oh you talk to your precious Hermione but not me" which, yeah, was annoying.

Eh, always found Cho boring, personally. I also have a low opinion of people who can't keep their emotions in check in public (in b4: You're terrible! Yes I know, but I can't help the way I feel. If she were a real person, I'd probably be more sympathetic. But seriously who the FUCK brings up their dead ex on a date?)

So much word. I've always liked Cho and though I (thankfully) haven't seen much hate for her, I'm glad for that because it would probably make me rage. It really was just a matter of bad timing with her and Harry, and unfortunately they never recovered. There was no way that date was going to go well, and though I'm still disappointed that things didn't work out between her and Harry - I know; teens don't normally date forever, but his crush on her was freaking adorable - it was a 'realistic' failed outcome in that awkward high school way, and I love that Hermione was there to explain everything to the confused boys, since we were never going to get Cho's POV through Harry.
