It's not like you knew and defended his actions. I didn't know Sean Penn had been accused of abusing Madonna, either.

Haha, I knew there was a reason I hated Sean Penn that wasn't just "he looks like a prick."

It's really terrible that it's not as well known, because he gets all of these awards and acclaim. Chris Brown has to walk around his entire life with people knowing that he's abusive, and Sean Penn should as well. It's not like he's been particularly remorseful either, he just never threw a chair through a window.

It helps that Sean Penn is a white guy because if he wasn't you know people would hate him as much as Chris Brown.

Oh, some of us remember the 80s well enough and know what Sean Penn was (and IMO has probably never gotten past being) - it wasn't just the stories about Madonna, it was his whole history with paparazzi, which frankly were less scary 20 years ago than now. Every time my sister and I see Ryan Reynolds, our joint reaction is "ScarJo left him for SEAN PENN??"

True, but a lot of us don't remember the eighties because we weren't born then, such as myself, and it's not something that is brought up often. Yeah, IDK why anyone would go from Ryan Reynolds to him either. :\

And surely in another twenty years people aren't going to even remember who Chris Brown is, let alone his criminal record. He's not going to have to 'live with it his whole life' while Sean Penn somehow 'got away with it'.

You're right, Chris Brown will probably not be remembered. He probably wouldn't even if he didn't assault Rihanna, as he was never particularly popular and was just seen as a poor man's Usher anyways. But for the rest of his career, and when people will run into him in the streets and say, "Hey, aren't you that guy-", he'll be seen as the guy who beat up Rihanna. Meanwhile, Sean Penn gets remembered as a talented and prolific actor, not as the guy who beat up Madonna. I don't think either of them should be remembered at all, but Sean Penn will be, and not as an abusive asshole.
