Did Jackson Browne then proceed to prance around and make an ass of himself, never once demonstrating that he had learned anything after his incredibly gracious lack of real punishment?

That's my main concern here. If Daryl Hannah backed this up (and I don't know if she did or not) that's another story.

It's not like you knew and defended his actions. I didn't know Sean Penn had been accused of abusing Madonna, either.

Haha, I knew there was a reason I hated Sean Penn that wasn't just "he looks like a prick."

It's really terrible that it's not as well known, because he gets all of these awards and acclaim. Chris Brown has to walk around his entire life with people knowing that he's abusive, and Sean Penn should as well. It's not like he's been particularly remorseful either, he just never threw a chair through a window.

It helps that Sean Penn is a white guy because if he wasn't you know people would hate him as much as Chris Brown.

Sad but true :(

Oh, some of us remember the 80s well enough and know what Sean Penn was (and IMO has probably never gotten past being) - it wasn't just the stories about Madonna, it was his whole history with paparazzi, which frankly were less scary 20 years ago than now. Every time my sister and I see Ryan Reynolds, our joint reaction is "ScarJo left him for SEAN PENN??"

I hate hate hate HATE how all his fans are like "He apologized! That automatically clears him of any wrongdoing! TEAM WEEEEEEEEZY!" No. He beat a woman in a fit of rage and practically got away with it, and is back to being revered and adored all over again - even after he threw a fit on a television show and broke something.

Sadly, if you're a celebrity, you can be involved in an accident causing someone's death (like Daesung from Big Bang), and all you'll have to do is pay off the family and not make any public appearances for six months, and you get to come back and promote all over again, while your fans say "Oh, I hope he's not too stressed!"

There's also Lindsey Lohan et al....

IDK, with Daesung, it's not like he was drunk driving or attempting to kill the guy or something. It was an accident, and he did apologize and is taking some sort of punishment for it, so I don't see why he can't come back. I think some of the fan reaction to it is gross (shouldn't we be sending support to the family of the deceased, not to someone who walked away completely unharmed?), but I don't think that he has to completely retire from showbiz because of this mistake.

Dude, there's a reason accidents are called accidents. If there's evidence that they were doing something irresponsible that led to the accident, like driving drunk, then they deserve criticism, but if you had a relative who survived an accident that killed someone else, would you say "Give up your career, you bastard; you must've caused that accident through recklessness and you should be punished for it"?

I keep asking myself why Chris Brown was allowed to have his career back. I mean, geez, we crushed Ashlee Simpson's music career for the horrible crime of lip-syncing, yet Chris Brown is allowed to keep hitting the top of the charts after beating his girlfriend?

*disgusted groan* I really hate humanity at times.

Not that I don't think Lindsay's done quite a bit of wrongdoing, but she's not really comparable in this situation. In fact, I'd argue that it's kind of fucked up that her career has basically been destroyed, whereas men who have done active harm to people, especially women, including rape and murder, are still thriving.

Micheal Fassbender is the one that gives me the skeeves this way. With the new X-Men movie exploding in popularity so is he. But I'm sitting there going "So is he gonna kick the shit of your precious McAvoy on the good ship McFassy?"

What's the story with him?

His ex-girlfriend popped up and claimed he beat her, broke her nose or knee or both and caused an ovarian cyst to burst, took out a restraining order and demanded money for medical bill. The post I got that all from has magically disappeared and tracking down others is like grabbing smoke.

Apparently she's since rescinded her claims but had also claimed similar things of previous men in her life. It's all very sketchy, but just having the claim there feels like the elephant in the room sometimes. It doesn't take much to harsh a squee.

I did a lot of research on the mess between Fassbender and his wife, and I thought it was established that she was making the abuse up. She didn't report until two years after the alleged event, there was no evidence provided of the injuries she claimed to have sustained, and she dropped the charges a short time after making them.

[And for note, I am not a Fassbender fan and I haven't seen the movie, so I have no reason to defend him if I believed he was guilty.]

I thought it was just a girlfriend, not a wife. I understand that charges were later dropped and the woman had similar unsubstantiated claims in the past, but sometimes charges for things magically go away in Hollywood so I'm still left with that little niggling.

If anything, I'd say you're far from a hypocrite, since this is making you think about things rather than mindlessly defending someone. I don't think you should be labeled a hypocrite for not knowing something.

After a quick google search this really doesn't seem as cut and dry as Chris Brown's was, so I think if it bothers you the thing to do is to evaluate the evidence (if there is any) and the rumors and see what you think. But the fact you're thinking like this says to me that you aren't a bad person.

I'd say it's a good thing you're not a fan - for him. You're incredibly gullible if you didn't know anything about the charges or even the background situation but one LJ entry vaguely describing the charges is all it takes for you to decide they must be true..

Do us all a favor, if you ever get called for jury duty, tell them you can't serve because you're terminally stupid. Lady Justice thanks you.

The two are different in that one has clear proof and the other has had no proof beyond alligations that have since been recanted.

With Jackson Browne there are no police, hospital, or other records of abuse. There was an incident which people often site due to the police being called over a fight. He called the police to settle a dispute over personal items while he was moving out. During this incident the police records state no physical altercation happened. Later, she accused him of beating her. She has since retracted the allegations. Her uncle tried to go to the media stating he had proof. When asked to produce the proof the uncle never produced anything other than allegations.

Not saying it did or did not occur. Without evidence the only two people who know what happened is them. Now, with Chris Brown it happened without a doubt.
