(Anonymous) 2011-07-28 04:36 am (UTC)(link)OP, you have a point in that there are a lot of cosplayers (plus-size and otherwise) who wear costumes that are unsuitable for their body type. I can't count how many times I've seen someone cosplay FFX-2 Rikku when they honestly did not have the figure to wear a bikini top and miniskirt. And you're right, a lot of those people who claim depression as a reason don't seem to realize that exercise and a healthy diet can help.
That said, I really haven't seen a lot of people point any of this out to said cosplayers in a constructive way or make suggestions for more appropriate cosplay outfits. I may just be looking in the wrong places, but eight or nine times out of ten, when I hear or read remarks made about those cosplayers, they're along the lines of "eww, what a fat pig/oink-oink, fatty" or such, which is unnecessary and hurtful. It would really help, I think, if more people would comment in a more constructive way. There will still be those who don't listen (there always are), but a lot more people will be willing to listen if the critics would just use less hurtful words.
