Look godammit we just had this same dumbass argument a few days ago, so I'll just get it out of the way now:

Someone will be like "But if the characters have chemistry is it really that big of a deal to put them together regardless of their established sexuality?"

Someone else will say something like "IT'S NOT THE SAAAAAME BLAH BLAH OPPRESSION BLAH BLAH BLAH"

then someone else will be like "It's fucking fanfiction, who gives a shit?"

and then someone will start throwing around the word "privilege" until it loses all meaning

and then some idiot will screech "FANDOM DOES NOT EXIST IN A VACUUM!!!!!"

This will go on. And on. And on.

and inevitably I will want to stab all of you

So I am asking -nay, demanding- that all of you ignore this secret and save us all a lot of rage

idk man, I've seen a lot of people in fandom talk pretty casually about their drug use so I'm not sure if I would call fandom anti-drug as a whole

Honestly? I'm with you. I have no idea why people would promote such a lifestyle. The cruel part of me wants to pass it off as overweight people not wanting to see anyone tell them that how they live isn't healthy. The more rational part of me... well, there has to be some other explanation, but hell if I can find it. I just do not understand the enabling thought process behind some of what I've seen. No at all.

Wow, you're an idiot. Do you even know what "fat acceptance" means? It doesn't mean telling people that they're healthy when they're not. It means being against tormenting people for superficial and shallow reasons and for minding your own fucking business regarding other people's bodies and health. Some overweight people actually are healthy, it is possible. Otherwise, what do you expect people to do? If you're overweight, you don't just think to yourself "I want to lose weight and be ~healthy~" one day and then magically become thin the next day. Weight loss is a long and difficult process that takes years and is extremely difficult. And you know what? Having everyone around you harassing you and mocking you doesn't prompt you to want to lose weight any faster. It makes you miserable. It makes you doubt yourself. It makes you think you'll never be able to succeed in losing weight. It makes you paranoid that, even if you do, you still won't be good enough, or that people who look at you will be able to tell that you used to be fat and judge you for it. It actually drives people to suicide sometimes.

So sorry, but I don't understand why fat acceptance isn't already a thing. Who the fuck are you helping by mocking and ridiculing them?

Because there are more fat people than drug users, I guess. Especially here in the US, where almost 70% of the adult population is overweight or obese (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/overwt.htm) ... it's hard to lecture the majority.

Although IMO, fandom isn't really the place for lectures, whether they be for drug users or overweight/obese people.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-28 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Assumptions ahoy here. You assume that every fat person is unhealthy. You assume that it's any of your damn business what someone else wears and whether it meets your "body type" standards. You assume that there aren't as many skinny people who dislike exercise as their are fats (or that it's any of your damn business in the first place).

The reason people talk about needing fat acceptance? People like you who think it's any of your fucking business what someone else eats, wears or looks like and that they should be treated differently because of it.

[identity profile] hoshika.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Do you walk up to complete strangers or friends and start lecturing them about how bad their smoking habit is? No? Why do you do the same to people you deem "unhealthy"? I wonder why...Oh, I know why..you want to body police people on the internet because you are so insecure with your own body.

Go awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay.

I'm tired of reiterating myself. BMI is bad. I know "fat/unhealthy" people that can outrun socially-acceptable-weighted people. I know "unhealthy" people who are vegan, and vegetarian. I know people who are very active but still retain the fucking weight.

Weight =/= healthy. JFC.

Being fat isn't necessarily unhealthy.

Lots of fat people do exercise and get lots of benefits from it, including better health and better well-being. But it doesn't always make them thin.

And other people's health isn't any of your fucking business anyway. A person's worth isn't determined by their health.

[identity profile] sensualcoco.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
1. Fat and unhealthy are not the same thing. Just as skinny does not equate to healthy. (believe or not something that was actually taught in my health class) There are so many factors that go into a person's physical wellness.

2. Because people who are fat are still people and are just as deserving of respect as everyone else. They deserve to do things that make them happy and not be mocked in the process. They shouldn't be discriminated against. You know, just basic human rights.

3. Because people need to be happy with their bodies to be well. You can't hate your body, it just brings suffering and depression, and when you're in that slump, it's not healthy. Mental wellness is important too.

There are other reason that I wish I could articulate right now.

I'm a plus-size person who greatly enjoys cosplaying, but I have to say I can see both sides of the argument here.

OP, you have a point in that there are a lot of cosplayers (plus-size and otherwise) who wear costumes that are unsuitable for their body type. I can't count how many times I've seen someone cosplay FFX-2 Rikku when they honestly did not have the figure to wear a bikini top and miniskirt. And you're right, a lot of those people who claim depression as a reason don't seem to realize that exercise and a healthy diet can help.

That said, I really haven't seen a lot of people point any of this out to said cosplayers in a constructive way or make suggestions for more appropriate cosplay outfits. I may just be looking in the wrong places, but eight or nine times out of ten, when I hear or read remarks made about those cosplayers, they're along the lines of "eww, what a fat pig/oink-oink, fatty" or such, which is unnecessary and hurtful. It would really help, I think, if more people would comment in a more constructive way. There will still be those who don't listen (there always are), but a lot more people will be willing to listen if the critics would just use less hurtful words.

[identity profile] babybeluga2003.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Fat acceptance and stopping body policing? Perfectly okay and understandable.

Pretending like for the most part being fat isn't a choice, or that being obese doesn't affect your health in a negative way? Not okay.

For the most part, though, the best policy is to mind your own business about other people's life choices.

Everyone else has already addressed the misconception that all overweight people are unhealthy and don't exercise. The statement that exercise and healthy eating will help stave off depression is true, certainly, but it's an argument based in privilege - the privilege of access to healthy food, free time in which to exercise, and mild enough depression symptoms that something like exercise endorphins can alleviate. Don't worry, OP, it's a privilege bias I share - I was diagnosed as clinically depressed, but I chose food and exercise and keeping busy over medications, but I have to remind myself that I get to do that because I am lucky, because my depression is rarely severe.

I do, however, agree with the statement about people in clothes not suited to their body type or the right size for them. I just think, it has to be uncomfortable. If I wear even slightly tight jeans then whenever I sit down I feel compelled to unbutton them to be comfortable, and I wear a single-digit US size. So I always think that the girls I see out in skinny jeans with flesh draping over the top must be in pain.

Fat acceptance =/= encouraging unhealthy lifestyle

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-07-28 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Look, the problem here is that you’re mixing a few things up.
What is perceived as fat in our society is not actually fat by realistic standards. Especially for women. The bodies we see on TV are not actually bodies most of us can have. So yes, some people oppose that line of thinking and rightfully so.
But yes, some people really are fat, and yes, obesity as a real issue. And sure, if you go over a certain weight that is bad for your health (There are people who deny that, but that’s just ludicrous too) – but the point is, there is a difference between acknowledging that weight can be a health issue and discriminating fat people because of it.
The fact is that fat people generally know they’re fat, they know it has risks, and they do not need you to tell them that. They have been told a thousand times over. If they wish o lose weight, that is between them and their doctor (and really, if it were that easy we’d all be thin).
The fact s you’re making a judgment about people based on their physical appearance – without even knowing what caused the weight gain, as there are many medical conditions that do. Fact is, even if the weight is caused by a medical condition fat people do not we you an explanation about their medical condition .
You can fully acknowledge that weight can be a health risk, but achnowledge that someone else’s weight and medical status is none of your business. It’s not mutually exclusive you know.

being slightly overweight and chubby doesn't necessarily mean you're unhealthy. if you're obese however, then yeah please try to work on that because it really does cause a lot of problems.

I only care when tax payers money, MY money is being used to treat people who are irresponsible enough to get so big.

With regard to fat acceptance vs. health issues, this blog post by Greta Christina has been the most level headed thing I've seen: http://gretachristina.typepad.com/greta_christinas_weblog/2010/12/caught-between-fat-and-thin.html

tl,dr: Yes, being fat can cause health problems. No, it's no-one else's business.

This is just out of personal interest, because I would have agreed with OP like six months ago, and it looks like a few commenters are still just not getting it.

I could point out that there's a huge difference between fat acceptance and fat encouragement, and that not shaming someone because of their body doesn't discourage a healthy lifestyle. I see lots of people chronically their weight-loss plans on the my flist and people encouraging their progress. No one tries to discourage that. It's just that people don't go out of their way to shame those not actively trying to slim down.

ButI don't reply to those posts. Because I don't care. I don't care about weight when it comes to fandom. Fandom, to me, is not about weight or health or dieting.

It's about who can produce the hottest porn.

Prove to me that being a size six makes you better at describing blowjobs. Prove that a BMI under thirty means you can draw a more realistic cock. Then I'll care.

Until then, I'm not your doctor, your lover or your parent. I'm just someone who wants to see smutty stuff and I don't care at all about what the person producing it looks like. It's not relevant in this particular space.
