The movie is called Cyberbully for fuck's sake, which is the single most bullshit word ever conceived by man. The whole movie was mock-worthy, and yes, even that scene.

Suicide isn't funny when it's happening in real life. But in fiction, I've found that absolutely anything can be funny if done right (or wrong, in this case...haha).

(Anonymous) 2011-07-31 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I completely disagree with that. I think there ARE some things that should not be joked about, ever, regardless of the context or how well or horribly they are portrayed. And in my mind, suicide is one of those things.

I assume you're going to disagree with me no matter what I say, but those are my thoughts. I just don't see what's funny about suicide, period.

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-07-31 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm in the "everything is okay is joke about, or nothing is" camp. The minute you put something on a pedestal and it can never be joked about, that's the minute you reinforce that subject matter as taboo. We need to de-mystify suicide, make it less shameful to talk about, and humor is a great way to do that.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-31 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Not wanting people to joke about suicide doesn't mean I'm making it taboo. If something is taboo it is usually not talked about at all, just avoided entirely. I agree with you saying "We need to de-mystify suicide and make it less shameful to talk about," but I don't agree with the last part. I don't see humor as a good way to talk about it, because suicide is not humorous. It's serious, and should be taken seriously, not joked about.

I disagree 1000%. Impasse, we're at one, etc.

The minute you put something on a pedestal and it can never be joked about, that's the minute you reinforce that subject matter as taboo

so you think it's ok to joke about rape then?
i mean i think it's ok if you're a victim/survivor and you cope by sharing and joking about your experience but, well, i don't think i've ever heard a rape joke like that. they generally come from a place of ignorance and are told by people who will probably never ever experience a rape.

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-08-01 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
so you think it's ok to joke about rape then?

It's all okay, or none of it is. I think my stance should be pretty clear at this point.

told by people who will probably never ever experience a rape.

Who do you mean? Rape can happen to anyone.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-08-01 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
i mean it's mostly told my men-- douches like daniel tosh

i didn't mean to imply that men can't be raped, but according to statistics it's a hell of a lot less likely

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-08-01 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I love Daniel Tosh.

Also, men are much, much less likely to report that they've been raped. Men are raped more frequently than the stats would suggest.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-08-01 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, let me rephrase: men aren't raised the way women are. they aren't raised to constantly have to avoid being raped-- don't wear this, don't walk there, keep an eye on your drink, lock everything, etc. they're raised without the fear of rape, which probably also makes it more unlikely that they'll report it when it actually happens. the point is that most men sort of live in a different world, where it's easier to make jokes about rape because it's not a scary thing.

and i'll reiterate that i wouldn't mind rape jokes if they were coming from a survivor who used them as a way of coping. but i don’t think I’ve ever heard a stand-up routine that began with “So, uh, I was raped, and…”

i think it's something you joke about and laugh about when you have absolutely no concept of the gravity of the situation

then again i guess there's no point in arguing with you if you think that shit like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wc84UQy_OUA is anything but disgusting

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-08-01 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah nope, you're not gonna make any headway with me. :T

[identity profile] silver-coins.livejournal.com 2011-08-01 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
Arhg, this shit is such bullshit. You're basically saying that a woman who has never been raped, but has been scared of it should get to joke about rape. But people like me, a guy who was sexually abused since the age of 3 shouldn't get to because I'm a guy who wasn't "raised to be scared of rape".

I'm really tired of rape being a womens issue only. I have so many male friends who got raped. You know what I'm also tired of? People saying I don't get a say in rape-issues because I'm a dude and women assuming I have never been raped because of my gender. How can you even know that these male comedians aren't victims? Just cause they don't admit to it?

And, yeah, as a rape-survivor I think rape can be joked about. Is there rape-jokes that are disgusting and uncalled for? Yes. But some are genuinly funny.

[identity profile] cold-river-blue.livejournal.com 2011-08-01 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
It's all okay, or none of it is.

I agree, 100%! If we start saying you can't joke about one particular thing, where do we stop? Who decides what is and isn't up for discussion?

In my opinion, part of 'the discussion' of any topic is humor. I'm a rape survivor, and I have no problem with rape humor, nor did I before I was raped. I have attempted suicide, and lost loved ones to suicide, and I have no problem with suicide jokes. I've had very young family members die, and I have no problem with dead baby jokes. I also have no problem with people joking about racism, or war, or any of the other awful things I've never experienced. I also recognize that other people who share my experiences or have different experiences may not find these jokes funny or acceptable. But why should they get to dictate where it is okay to find humor?

And for the record, I laughed my ass off when I saw the scene in this secret.
