People are making jokes about that scene? That's ridiculous. The movie was terribly written, yes, but suicide is never funny. And the actors did the best with what they were given.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-31 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the point was the girl never would have been driven to suicide attempts if she'd done the smart thing and deleted her account on whatever it was in the first place. I'm not defending the people joking about the suicide thing, but usually shitty writing garners shitty responses. And as someone who has been harassed online before I think this movie is disgusting, particularly the bullshit ending.

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2011-07-31 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't see the movie and I refuse to because of bad it looks, so what did happen at the end?

Movie Clips Included

(Anonymous) 2011-07-31 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically everything ends all hunky dory and the girl who was harassed stays friends with her best friend, who was one of the people lying to her online and pretending to be a boy (who might I add the protagonist stupidly gave all of her personal information to despite the fact she had no proof whatsoever this "guy" existed). Further, everyone's basically all "Oh it's okay honey" too instead of calling her out on the fact she didn't block anyone or delete her account or anything. In my opinion the protagonist (besides being a complete dumbass) had more than her fair share of jerk moments in the movie, like this little gem here. It's pretty hard to sympathize with her after a while.

Everything in the movie exudes stupid and unrealistic. I should add that most people make fun of the attempted suicide scene, which pretty much speaks for itself here. It's just painful to watch and not for the reasons it should be. Horrible acting aside, the movie expects us to believe a sixteen year old girl can't open a childproof cap on a bottle of pills:

I'm sorry, can you tell me what movie this is?

[identity profile] formula-410.livejournal.com 2011-07-31 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I also came here to ask, I haven't heard about this

(Anonymous) 2011-07-31 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Cyberbully.

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-07-31 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The movie is called Cyberbully for fuck's sake, which is the single most bullshit word ever conceived by man. The whole movie was mock-worthy, and yes, even that scene.

Suicide isn't funny when it's happening in real life. But in fiction, I've found that absolutely anything can be funny if done right (or wrong, in this case...haha).

(Anonymous) 2011-07-31 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I completely disagree with that. I think there ARE some things that should not be joked about, ever, regardless of the context or how well or horribly they are portrayed. And in my mind, suicide is one of those things.

I assume you're going to disagree with me no matter what I say, but those are my thoughts. I just don't see what's funny about suicide, period.

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-07-31 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm in the "everything is okay is joke about, or nothing is" camp. The minute you put something on a pedestal and it can never be joked about, that's the minute you reinforce that subject matter as taboo. We need to de-mystify suicide, make it less shameful to talk about, and humor is a great way to do that.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-08-01 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
OP, the reason the scene is so hilarious (to me, at least) is because the writers fucked up so badly on such a serious subject. i wouldn't consider this a "suicide joke", exactly? i mean, i'm 100% against rape jokes, but i've read terrible romance novels and laughed out loud at the cringeworthy rapey bits just because they're so fucking ridiculous.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-08-01 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I understand what you're saying, although I ignored the movie's awful execution and focused solely on the subject matter. I have a close friend who tried to off herself before I met her, so I'm just really intense/sensitive about the idea of suicide and I hate the way people are reacting to that one scene in particular. I know it was poorly done. I just wish it had been about something other than suicide so I could join in the mocking instead of trying over and over to defend it and getting nowhere.

Re: OP

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-08-01 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
it sounds to me like suicide is a triggery/squicky issue for you, so i can understand why you took it more seriously... but this movie doesn't seem like something you should have watched, i guess? i mean, if, like you, suicide was a very sensitive issue for me, i think that the movie would piss me off more than anything with its insensitive portrayal, besides its general stupidity! but maybe that's just me.

[identity profile] shinyhappypanic.livejournal.com 2011-08-01 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
the movie was pretty funny until that part. I can't believe anyone would laugh at a suicide ever, but it does happen, even in real life. at least this was just a movie.

[identity profile] cheese-hybrid.livejournal.com 2011-08-01 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I tried to commit suicide in the past, and I admit that I did laugh at "I CAN'T GET THE CAP OFF." Suicide is a triggery subject for me normally and rewatching the scene, I did feel awful. But the initial ridiculousness of it caught me off-guard and that was my reaction. I blame the writers. I really do.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-01 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
People are joking about the scene, OP, not suicide. That movie was stupid and that scene was over the top ridiculousness that is perfectly worthy of ridicule. That doesn't mean that people who make fun of it are mocking the actual act of suicide.

Say it with me folks: Fiction =/= real life. Joking about a (really bad) fictional depiction =/= making light of a serious issue.

[identity profile] szaleniec1000.livejournal.com 2011-08-01 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
This. I've not seen the film the secret refers to, but I've seen enough fictional depictions that make something that would be (and is) horrific in real life into a macabre joke to understand what you're saying.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-01 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Let's face it, everybody is going to find different things funny. And not everybody is going to have an 100% appropriate sense of humor. That scenes was ridiculous in both its execution and the message it was trying to get across, so many people found it funny as opposed to emotional or deep. You can't blame people for that.

[identity profile] punishermax.livejournal.com 2011-08-01 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)

Also I'm sorry, I really am, but this move is fucking awful and hilarious, the girl is annoying and an ass to every single person in the film, the acting is atrocious and the suicide scene is, I'm truly sorry, but hilarious because of how magically bad it was.

No one is sitting here laughing at suicide victims, You do realize it's entirely possible to laugh at tragedy depicted badly in a film and not cackle with glee at suicide reports in the news right? Like, when I see an really gory death in a horror movie I laugh at the sheer absurdity of it, like in Final Destination. That doesn't mean I laugh when real people die.

People can identify between fiction and reality, sorry, but the terrible actress was not really gonna kill herself even IF she could get the cap off.

[identity profile] green-glee.livejournal.com 2011-08-01 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)

This. Watching that TV show Scarred made me physically ill, but horror/gore/whatever? Is damn funny to me because there is no real threat to anybody.

i'm sorry, but how on earth am i not supposed to lol at that?!
