I actually think you are in the majority in liking Snape. I never really loved him and I felt indifference to his death...I don't know why.

umm most ppl in the theater i saw it in were crying/upset

(Anonymous) 2011-08-06 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was fairly common to be upset by his death, especially after getting an insight into his mind through that memory-dump. I haven't really seen many people being cruel or obnoxious to people who were upset by it. Maybe I'm just fandom-sheltered.

Of course, I also believe you don't have to be a Snape fan to be upset by his death. I never believed he was evil and always maintained Dumbledore trusted him for a reason, but I still found him a bully with a repulsive personality. I liked reading about it, he's a very interesting character, but he was somebody I loved to hate, just like Draco - that makes a good villain, to me. But I was upset at his death, to see just how empty his life had been, how he'd never been able to get over Lily daring to fall for another man and how he wallowed in his misery until it all-but consumed him. He must have been incredibly lonely, and that's what upset me.

On the other hand, I wouldn't be pissy or aggressive towards anyone who simply liked Snape, who cried because they lost a favourite character. People like what they like. I know there's a small but vocal minority of Snapefen who like to excuse his bullying of children and act like his behaviour towards people like Neville was justified, and that skeeves me out but, like I said, they're the minority and easy enough to avoid. The majority of Snapefen I have no issue with at all.

I really didn't care when Snape died, but I'm not going to berate anyone for liking him or being upset when he died. It's when someone romanticizes him until he becomes this unrecognizable ultimate hero and completely forgets who he really was and then claim that all of Harry's children should have been called Severus Snape Potter 1, 2 and 3. The wizarding world must erect a statue in his honor, etc, like Harry making sure it was known that Snape was a hero in the war.

heh
sorry. But you are not by any means alone =)

[identity profile] semi-subtle.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, OP, an obscene amount of people cry over Snape's death for the exact same reasons. You're definitely not alone.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-06 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
You definitely are not alone. He was the only character death I cried for because he was my favorite character, and more to the point, had (IMO) what was one of the most tragic story lines. I also tend to like characters that are assholes, are imperfect and seem to have some kind of depth. But there are a lot of Snape fans in the fandom, keep your eyes open and you will find them. ;p

[identity profile] cheshirecat324.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I cried at Snape's death, and BAWLED at the penseive montage that followed it. Granted, I think in my case it had a little more to do with Alan Rickman giving such an amazing performance.

Even though there are a lot of Snape fans, I understand how you feel because a lot of my friends and people I'm surrounded by (like people I follow on Tumblr) DESPISE him and take every opportunity to make it known, so it really does feel like there aren't many fans sometimes, even if they ARE the majority. But I cried too, OP!

[identity profile] biodamper.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I cried too, OP ;_____;

I kinda get what you're saying though, about the hate. I've seen a lot of it on tumblr. Snape was a dickhead, and was really immature, but if someone fails to see how his story was sad and tragic, then I'm at a loss for words.

[identity profile] ladyorihime.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
You don't have a heart if you didn't at the very least felt sad for him, so by bawling, you are WIN in my book, OP.

I bawled too. Shit, you could hear sniffling from quite a few people when Snape died...then it kept getting worse with Fred, Remus, and Tonk's deaths. And then Harry learning that Snape really was really a good and brave man after seeing his memories. And then seeing him holding Lily's body and just...losing it. I had to bite my lip to keep myself from sobbing out loud.

Dammit! Now I'm tearing up (οΎ‰Π”`) Damn you, Alan Rickman, for being so fucking amazing!

I haven't cried like that in a movie theater since TITANIC, and then last movie I cried at was the 1st Pokemon movie when Pikachu was trying to revive Ash. I was 12 when Titanic came out, I was 14 when the first Pokemon movie was in theaters. I'll be turning 26 in November XD

...Uh..everyone I know has cried and felt very sad over his death.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone I know cried over his story. I don't even like him that much (he's a dick) but his story/end was saaad.

[identity profile] skiota.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah pretty majority. I never read all the books, and never really liked him (character, not actor) but when he died and when Harry learned about him I BAWLED. So glad I wasn't the only one in the midnight premiere who was bawling at everything lol.

[identity profile] novemberxi.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
From what I've seen it's the opposite...

Everyone I know cried over Snape's death and those who didn't were considered heartless by them.

[identity profile] carey-pontmercy.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think there are many people who truly feel that negatively towards Snape. The trouble is that some fans idealize him, justify all his less admirable actions, and demonize most of the other characters, so people feel the need to point out that he wasn't exactly a saint. Personally, I have no problem with him in the book. I like that he's a complicated character and feel sorry for him; however, I also like that Rowling doesn't portray it as admirable when he bullies a child or uses a slur. It's only the fanon Snape, who is portrayed as perfect even when he's doing something cruel, that I have a problem with.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
The only character death I cried for was Dobby. :T God I hated that little bastard, but I was so sad to see him die.

But anyway, I really don't understand why this is a secret. Bitches love Snape! He has a metric fuckton of fans. And anyone who gives you crap for crying over his death is probably so full of crap themselves that they had to give you some of their crap in order to alleviate the pressure.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
The Malfoys. Horrible people; awesome parents.

[identity profile] hallieface.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think Snape is a huge asshole. The way he talks to his students, particularly Harry and Neville, is disturbing, especially considering that initially he only hates Harry for being James' son and he hates Neville because he thinks that if Voldemort had gone after him, Lily would still be alive. It's really gross.

That being said, I bawled at his death when I reread the book and watched the last movie. I may not think he's a great person, but I think his story is beautiful and tragic. In the end he was good, and he died doing what was right. A lot of people like him, and while I'm not one of them, I appreciate what he did and definitely don't hold liking him against anyone.

[identity profile] monkeyprincess7.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
I was a sobbing wreck the moment he came on screen actually. I didn't like movie!Snape much for the first 2 movies, but fell in love with him during the 3rd and onwards, so when he died, it felt like a part of me died too. I'm still not over it.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-06 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's not like millions of fans loved Snape and cried at his death, is it?

It's much stranger to be in the middle ground, where you recognize that he's probably JKR's best-realized character, and really like him in the context of the series itself, but also see how he's an absolutely horrible person who likes to bully vulnerable little kids without remorse, because there was only one single person in his whole life he ever gave a damn about.

I mean, tormenting children should be okay if he's 'sexy' and 'hurting,' right?

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't cry as much as realize I had Snarry to add to my ever expanding list of ships in this fandom.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-06 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't cry when he died in the end of the movie but I really feel sorry for his empty life and tragic end.
It's nagging my mind constantly that I started searching fics where he survived. *geez*
And I wasn't really a big fan of the series to the point of searching for fics and the like before this
