ugh, so tired of people who copy-paste their own upbringing and culture onto others...

This.

It reminds me of that blackface skit on Australian TV a few years back, that the American media got up in arms about, despite the fact that there isn't a history of blackface in Australia (though we have our own racist background) and there are many people in Australia who have never even heard of blackface (I myself hadn't heard of it until I went to college). It was stupid of the American media to assume everyone has their cultural background and/or is aware of their own cultural background.

There's a long history of blackface in Australia, even though we also have a history of not teaching about those parts of our history very well. If you hadn't heard about it, that's on you (and the education system), not on the American media.

This. My friend took an Australian history course at uni, and started telling me about all this stuff he'd learnt, particularly early race relations type stuff, that I'd never heard before. The sort of basic stuff you'd expect to have learnt in high school history class. It was an eye opener.

tl:dr Australian high school history is really shit.

This reminds me of something I was curios of then. How did people of color there feel about it? Was it still offensive as an ugly part of their history or were they more relaxed?

(Anonymous) 2011-08-06 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know how they felt, but Australia didn't have black slavery, and our black population is pretty tiny.

And like the people above mentioned, if Australia did have a history of blackface, almost no one knows about it. I know I didn't even hear of blackface until this whole issue bought it up.

Er...thanks? You would have to be living under a rock to be an Australian who doesn't know about the White Australia policy, our mistreatment of Aboriginals or the Stolen Generation. But that's not what I was talking about. I was talking specifically about blackface. Not many Australians are familiar with the implications of blackface because it's not something that is apart of Australian history or culture.

I would imagine that most black people there, tiny portion or not, would find it offensive since it is something that has been used to insult their race. Rather the country had a history of it or not.

I am not insulting anyone, including the performers in the skit, but I don't think it was only an "America being nosy" thing. I saw many news pieces about people of color in various countries finding it offensive when it happened.
