ugh, so tired of people who copy-paste their own upbringing and culture onto others...

(Anonymous) 2011-08-06 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
This.

It reminds me of that blackface skit on Australian TV a few years back, that the American media got up in arms about, despite the fact that there isn't a history of blackface in Australia (though we have our own racist background) and there are many people in Australia who have never even heard of blackface (I myself hadn't heard of it until I went to college). It was stupid of the American media to assume everyone has their cultural background and/or is aware of their own cultural background.

Okay, let's repeat this slowly for all the people who still haven't caught on. Being offended is something subjective. You may be offended by something that does not offend other people. That's your right. You may not be offended by something that other people do find offensive. That's also your right. What's NOT your right is to elevate your personal feeling of being offended or not being offended to some sort of moral guideline of what is appropriate and what is not, what is acceptable to say and what not. Because of, you know, it being SUBJECTIVE.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-06 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Offense is subjective, yeah, but when enough of the population agrees on something being offensive then there's a kind of standard, you know?

And I do think blackface is one of those things that the ~majority~ does not consider OK.

There's subjective and then there's this;

From the Japanese movie, Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl

There is no way you can even excuse this. This is just textbook racist.

I don't honestly get this. I mean, yes, I know that blackface is very offensive in USA and I understand why. But what's wrong with wearing clothes or styles from different cultures? Cultures are influencing each other all the time: music, art, literature, cinema... I can't see why clothes should be a problem.

As I mentioned below, it's about context. In general terms, the problem is when a privileged group oppresses a minority, then treats that minority's culture like a fun kitschy commodity.

Well I find your font color offensive. :\

(Anonymous) 2011-08-06 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Before I say anything: I'm not an expert on cultural appropriation and I am also white. It's not my place to judge whether people of color should or should not offended by the cultural appropriation/blackface in these pictures; if you find it offensive, I will acquiesce to your judgment and feelings.

BUT to the OP: Note how none of the people in this picture are white. None of these people have white privilege, and I'm pretty sure that none of their ancestors owned black slaves in America or created minstrel shows, or killed Native Americans to take their land. They have their own racial history and politics and I don't expect them to know everything about America as if America is the center of the world. Part of the reason cultural appropriation/blackface by white people is so harmful is because white people also oppress blacks and Native Americans and have for centuries. That doesn't necessarily make it okay for PoC to do it (see disclaimer above) but social context matters.

Readable secrets are overrated. A+, OP!

(Anonymous) 2011-08-06 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Whenever I hear "cultural appropiation", I get uncomfortable, because the reasoning behind it always seems to be "this race oppressed this other race so that means that the first race is forever guilty even if they weren't born yet or even if their ancestors hadn't even yet come to the country where this was going on yet."

It's just a bit too "sins of the father" for me, discounting any and all individualism.

I was linked to the T-ara - Yayaya video on youtube and I found myself more offended by the comments then the video itself.

Like this one: "Btw racism is when a certain race is discriminated, not made fun of. Native americans didn't have their rights reduced to rubble after this MV was published.

You can feel offended but I see childhood here. I grew up with hollywood movies and I have a pleasant image of the native american culture :D yup, thanks to movies I can also think of middle east without thinking of terrorism. Alladin, flying carpets, incence, roof-less houses - that's my image of middle east :D"

I don't follow KPop, but this secret made me go "ffff, Momoiro Clover, Pinky Jones..." and yeah.

though it was released like. Three days away from Columbus Day. Culturally relevant?

Though I wouldn't say it's trendy. I say that I like it because I love the group, but the whole concept made me a bit uncomfortable at first.

[identity profile] that-evening.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
To me, it comes down this, "play nice and be thoughtful".

I am sure a group in Africa or an area of Canada that's now home to many Native Americans would not get away with dressing up and "acting" Asian without some being offended. And they too would get the "but it's not part of the culture there" card.

Food for thought.

So uhhhh you're white and talking over minorities

Did you consider this

Regardless of which of you is right, you're talking over minorities. They can speak for themselves about what does and doesn't offend them just fine.

What compels people who are not African or a person of the African diaspora to paint themselves black at all

Really, someone explain this to me and how it could be considered acceptable in any context in any culture ever

Also can the hipster "'INDIAN' HEADDRESS" thing just die already, PLEASE

Is this where someone comes in to tell me to take the feather band off my Stetson and take down my dream-catcher? Make my mother get rid of her Native American jewellery? Because that was something I really did not understand when we visited the native villages in the South-West last year. Generally the native people were all very nice, friendly people. But there were a few who did this very strange thing where they would complain that [some aspect of their culture] was misunderstood, then when someone asked if they could share more information about [aspect], they refused. Some of them got quite snooty. It was almost like they were trying to be cultural hipsters, which was very confusing for ignorant-English-tourist me.

lol at the "but they aren't white!" stuff

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Um, they are the MAJORITY in their own country. So yes, believe it or not, they can be just as racist as anyone else and look down on other minorities. Racism doesn't end with just white people.

[identity profile] jump2narnia.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know...I'm an After School fan and when I watch A.S.Red's MV, I just thought they looked like a bunch of hippies, not Native-American stereotypes.
