I kind of agree with you, but kind of not.

I don't think they should be held to the level of accountability as Americans would if they tried the same thing. Clearly the context is different. But the K-pop industry is constantly trying to go international and promote internationally. Generally this means just Asia, but there are fans in North America and there have been concerts here also. Some Americans are going to see this (and have) and be offended by it. Along with any attempt to internationalize you have to be sensitive to this stuff.

And I don't think Koreans are ignorant, either - the Kikwang blackface thing is pretty obviously riffed off American racist stuff (ugh, the watermelon!). They KNOW it's racist. Yeah America isn't the centre of the world, but they DO listen to American music, watch American movies, etc. Assuming complete ignorance is almost condescending. On the one had you have to blame America for coming up with it in the first place and exporting their racism, but on the other hand... he's painting his face black as part of a humiliation routine. Is there any culture in which that's NOT racist?

THIS. This is not 100 years ago - most people know racism from other countries when they see it. POC don't have to exist only in America to be offended.

And saying they don't have the power given to white people is naive. THEY ARE THE MAJORITY IN THIER OWN COUNTY. I've seen what many POC endured there and it wasn't pretty.

I agree.
People in Korea and most parts of the world have access to the internet and should be able to know what is or isn't offensive in other parts of the world. As an American, I'm expected to know what does or doesn't offend people in foreign countries, I don't see why the rest of the world should get a free pass.
