YES.

They have their own racial history and politics and I don't expect them to know everything about America as if America is the center of the world.

OMG, please, people, remember this. As a non-American, I see so many things that are offensive over there that wouldn't even be noticed here. And things that are INCREDIBLY offensive here but totally PC in America.

A little off topic, but I'd be curious to hear what things are offensive where you live (and where that is) that would be considered PC in America. I'm all about learning how not to make an ass of myself if/when I go traveling.

Same here. I didn't know the victory sign was offensive in the UK, for example.

Generally, I think it's only the backwards version (so your palm is facing you) that's offensive, as far as I know.

It stems from the battle of Agincourt where the British longbowmen beat back the French who had supposedly threated to cut off the fingers of the archers if they were defeated. Its use is ambiguous until the early 20th century. However, by the fifties it was common amongst school kids.

So I think you'd be okay with a regular peace/victory sign :).

It's suprising what fingers have insulting meanings in different countries. Worth reading about if one is bored/travelling/curious.
