I think, for the ten thousandth time, that it is not established for anime canon that anon above does or should mean she. If and when it is, most of us will happily fall into line, but until then? Wanting Grell to ID as trans and having it be canon that Grell IDs as trans are not the same thing.

No. Yana Toboso, the mangaka, has called Grell "okama" which can also mean "campy drag queen" - this may have been poorly translated - if someone perceives Grell to be male they are not incorrect. Everyone has their own interpretation. Not that big of a deal.

1. Details? Some people consider author interview material canon in general; others don't. See also, endless arguments about whether what JKR says outside the books counts as HP canon. This isn't some special kind of argument that only comes up in the context of identity issues.

2. You might want to note that manga canon and anime canon diverge substantially from one another. Toboso has noted that someone else is writing, or at least contributing heavily to, anime canon and the anime storylines.

3. Anime canon. Where Grell presents as a man before becoming a shinigami in the recent OVA, apparently by choice.

4. Yes, I see and note your angry-face icon. Sorry about that. I like Grell as a woman, but I remain less sure that the canon requires everyone to agree than you seem to be.

A lot of people aren't aware of this. Even if it is canon, which is debatable, a lot of people just haven't seen the interviews/character guide where this is said. Not everyone who calls Grell "he" is deliberately misgendering Grell. If you've only seen the anime, it's perfectly reasonable to think that Grell is a man.

Not that it shouldn't be discussed, mind you, but people really need to stop saying that everyone who thinks Grell is a man is transphobic.
