Yes. You said it right there yourself. Fictional. As in, not real. Thank you for pointing that out for us all.

i think the people reading/writing the fics about the minors are all too busy doing that to be getting in the chatrooms to set themselves up to be featured on "to catch a predator." or... they just don't have any interest in real children.

sexual fantasies about children, and incidental arousal, are symptoms of pedophilia, that is true. however, they lose the "symptom" status if there's no actual sexual attraction to real children a person encounters. ergo, fantasy without attraction to the real life counterpart is not pedophilia, or any other sexual depravity you want to label people who have certain kinks with.

tl;dr fantasy (still) =/= reality.

i think maybe you're taking work outside of the office? being a psychologist, you do work with people with genuine mental conditions such as pedophilia, and more power to you because i agree that it - when it is what i find to be genuine based on my original comment - is a condition that needs some help. this may also be a personal block a lot of people may have, having a hard time understanding how something fictitious can be arousing where as the real thing could be repulsive? just from what i've been seeing in all the sub-threads.

i think maybe... most people don't find fictional children attractive, nor do they find real children attractive, so it becomes hard to understand how someone else could find a fake child attractive but not a real one? they see the black and white and not the grey area here, so the two subjects mingle? i'm... not sure if i'm making any sense with my train of thought, so i'm sorry if i'm not coming off clear on this.

i'm sorry, but i don't quite understand what you mean about fantasy being a real part of our lives? do you mean that people fantasize so much that it's beginning to seep into people's realities? like, fantasizing too much would inspire someone to actually act on those fantasies? and oh, i'm sorry, i didn't mean to imply you weren't entitled to your feelings on the subject! the comment about being aroused by a fantasy would mean being a pedophile, that was my main concern with your original comment, otherwise i understand why it would squick people out.

Being aroused by a fantasy is, imo, inherently different, than being aroused by the real thing.

I can't speak for all cases, obviously, but I think some people at least who read scenarios of an adult character being coerced, or a younger child being coerced, are not putting themselves in the fantasy as the person 'doing' but the victim. Like I said, not necessarily, I am sure there are readers who place themselves in the position of the dominant party.

I mean, I know I've gotten off on rape!fic before, however, I also know that I can't watch a graphic rape scene in a movie because it's more powerfully *real* than words on a page and a fantasy in my head.

I also have been known to read/write/enjoy pederastic scenarios in fiction, and recently had the experience of finding out someone in my real life who I admired and respected was arrested for soliciting sex from a teenage girl over the internet. While on a fantasy level I enjoy the first, I still feel sickened by the second.

tl;dr, but basically imo there are certainly people that will read fiction because they DO like the concept/idea/act IRL, however to say that everyone who enjoys the fantasy also will enjoy the reality is grossly inaccurate.

thank you, this better phrases some of what i was trying to convey.

I get really tired of seeing people justify their opinions by saying "I'm a psychologist" as if that's the end-all, be-all word on whatever SJ issue of the day there may be.

"I'm never judgmental at all." Weird, because that's exactly what it sounds like.

If you're really a psychologist I worry about your preemptive judgement of someone without knowing their background and your personal bias that a fantasy kink is a real life problem before you ever speak to a patient.

I have a great interest in psychology myself, but I can see why a lot of people dislike therapists. Who would want to go somewhere where they already feel judged and labeled? It's your job to be impartial and help, yes, but not by assuming there's something wrong with a person because of some random fictional fantasy they have.

I like rape kink, but I'm not a rapist. I am still appalled by anyone who would do that horrific thing to an actual human being. And while the examples above may be slightly extreme I would never go "Oh, those pedophiles!" Because it is fiction.

And fantasy is not necessarily reality.

Also, are you a psychoanalyst? Because then I could see where your comment came from a little easier. Even still, I clearly disagree with you.
