You're not an awful person for not telling your girlfriend. It is natural to try and shelter those we love. You don't want to hurt her but you will hurt her the most for taking your life. Hurting her to a lesser degree now by opening up to her doesn't make you awful either. When you love someone, you want to be there when they are hurting and you want to support them. Let her love you and maybe whilst in her arms her conviction will make you see that you deserve to be loved not just by her, but by yourself.

It wasn't Voyager that kept me from killing myself. It was a phone call from a friend that kept me from crashing my car into a tree. (which is sort of funny when phone calls normally cause people to crash...) But when something so small as 'hey let's hang out' was enough to keep me from doing it I realized that I wanted to live. The fact the show keeps you from doing it at all is a sign. I opened up to those I loved and yes I hurt my gf at the time but she never regretted helping me because she loved me. My best friend, my mother, I hurt them too with my honesty but they thanked me for it because they love me too and the day I let them love me was the first day I felt deserving of love, of life, of anything really.
