Sirius never got a chance to really grow as a person because he got himself killed by telling Harry to "take more risks."

Wait, are you implying that it was Sirius's fault that Harry made a mistake? All of the things that led up to the Department of Mysteries battle were all choices that Harry made. Harry chose to give up on Occlumency, despite everyone's misgivings, he chose not to practice, he chose to go to the Department of Mysteries. It doesn't matter wtf Sirius told him (and through a lot of the book Harry seems pretty uncomfortable with how rash Sirius is acting), Harry made those choices. Harry made choices. Sirius made choices. A lot of those choices were bad. Sirius just didn't get a chance to learn from his mistakes because...you know, he died.

Actually, reading that comment, I just don't think you really "got" that part of the book. Harry got himself into that situation. Sirius went to the Department because he knew Harry was in trouble and wanted to save him and also because he wanted some action. There wasn't any of Sirius "owning up" to whatever craziness you think he caused.

I mean, if anything, you could make an argument that if Sirius hadn't been awful to Kreacher none of that stuff would have happened, but you're not even making that argument.

This is not even touching the whole, "A person who has been in prison for 13 years for a crime they didn't commit has absolutely no justification for their immaturity vs. a person who has had every chance to grow up but chose not to...THAT'S BASICALLY LIKE THE SAME THING," thing.

Are you done playing Oppression Olympics?

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
...seriously?

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
That is all I hear when fans try to make this argument.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, it must be difficult to hear anything else, with your head that far up your own ass.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you seriously busting out the Oppression Olympics in a meta discussion about a fucking fictional story with fictional characters in which nobody was talking about anything related to SJ?

Did you seriously just do that?

Because that is one of the most derailing things I have ever seen done in a meta discussion, ever. Also, completely missing the point of people saying "Oppression Olympics" in the first place.

You know what is better than dropping the "Oppression Olympic"-bomb to try to score points off of me? Actually coming up with an intelligent reply.

Try it some time. You might learn something.

If you are at least one of the same anon's as above, I believe it was you who started talking about Sirius Black like he was some kind of greater personal hero and took it out of literary context into "real world" concerns.

Can we at least agree that both Snape and Sirius had an equal helping of good and bad qualities that made them interesting, believable and redemptive characters? I'm not saying they're perfect, nor am I making excuses for their actions. They both had tragic pasts. Sirius dealt with it in slightly healthier ways (and I think he was the only one truly sorry for the things he did to him in school, so +1), but dismissing Snape's story as "not tragic enough" to compete is just...

childish.

equal helping of good and bad qualities

IDK about them, but I don't know how you think a guy who was a bully in high school and then continues to act like a stupid teenager after 13 years of non-stop torture is equal to a guy who hung out with Magic Nazis and probably murdered people, bullied children as an adult, and was generally a huge douche to everyone even while being the "good guy" because he couldn't get over his obsessions.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
+1.

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. It took only this many comments before Godwin's Law was invoked again.

Hi, Godwin!

/In case you haven't already guessed, I have completely checked out of this discussion

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
The point still stands even if you call them Death Eaters instead of Magic Nazis - although, of course "Magic Nazis" is exactly what Death Eaters are...

Man, this is embarrassing to read.

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
It's not a Godwin when the Death Eaters are an actual Nazi metaphor, Christ.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Rowling herself admitted there were parallels between the Death Eaters and Nazis, so I think it's a warranted comparison in this case.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
lol what the fuck are you doing

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Were you the anon who deleted their long ass fail comment of capslock?

Because I'm not defending Snape. Sorry2Say.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
no, i'm the anon who's asking you what the fuck you are doing.

what on earth was there in the comment you replied to that made you think of oppression olympics?

also, lol, bleating about 'godwin, godwin!!!!' in a response to someone pointing out that yes, severus snape was a stupid horrible person and probably worse than sirius because at least sirius wasn't a prejudiced ass who bullied children as an adult and tortured and murdered people for having impure blood. it's okay, you can just admit you can't formulate a good argument without making yourself look even more ridiculous than you already did

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
lol k bb

i get it

you're an immature dumbshit who wishes you were an amazing internet badass or smth

it's cool

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
internet...bad ass

this two things are antithetical

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
is this part of your defense mechanism to admitting being wrong, since you know you always are? jw

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
If you really don't give a fuck, can't you just...stop replying? Perhaps let the whole thing go quietly into the night?

(Anonymous) 2011-08-08 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's funny because, if your behavior in these comments is anything to go by, you care way too fucking much.

[identity profile] meran-flash.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Ahahahaha oh my god.
