This! So much this!

People call the most random of characters Sues, and I can't comprehend why. I mean, Harry Potter? Really? The guy who shouts and makes mistakes and acts like a bratty teenager because he is one?
They are far too willing to point the finger. Because really, you take out everything that makes a main character special, be in a power, or backstory or whatever. Strip them down and you know what you have? A really boring character that no-one wants to read about. I mean, who would read "Harry Potter and the mediocre year at a muggle school because wizards are Gary-stus'.

The women thing bothers me too. Katniss from the Hunger Games was accused of this and I was like 'really? Why? Because she's a good archer/the main character?" There's no other reason. She doesn't even control half the events that occur during the books. The problem is that cynicism is seen as intelligence, and people think they seem more impressive while hating something than enjoying it.

The problem is that audiences are never pleased.

People have been calling KATNISS a Sue? Say what? o.0

I completely agree with you! It's also the reason why many people see happy, cheerful folks as being shallow, unrealistic, and stupid when most of the time that's not the case at all. This kind of thinking really irritates me because it suppresses a lot of people from just letting go, completely enjoying what they love, and being happy.

I think part of the problem is the fact that most narrators are biased, these stories aren't necessarily told through an omniscient presence but rather a single person moving through his/her life. So, in certain cases he/she is going to see others around him differently than an outside observer.

I got annoyed at the Harry Potter series in the instances when it seemed that anyone who said anything nasty about him and/or just didn't like him would be revealed as Baddies.

However, this was mostly in the earlier books, and Rowling did right with Snape at the end in particular, so it all worked out. I wouldn't call Harry Potter a Gary Stu.
