I hear that, hon.
I think Mary Sue is used far too often as an insult. The worst example, for me, was Elizabeth, from Pirates of the Caribbean. Jack Sparrow manages more than half of the improbable crap she does and he's never called out on it. I do suspect gender biased there.

Not a fan of PotC at all, and I've only seen the first two movies, but iirc Jack Sparrow was a VERY flawed man. Is it possible to say the same about Elizabeth?

She wasn't perfect, but she was definitely one of the 'noble' and 'admirable' characters you were supposed to admire. Added to that, Jack pulled a lot of crazy stunts that would never work in real life, but he's doing it in a series of movies that feature things like the living dead, so I think a certain amount of leeway can be given. On the other hand, Elizabeth often comes across like a modern woman shoved into a corset and, iirc, is very rarely called out on it. Obviously there were liberated women during the period, but it feels like she should have encountered a lot more opposition about it than she did.

Of course, at the end of the day, this is just my opinion and I'm sure there are plenty of people who would disagree with it.

Yeah Jack Sparrow is really flawed but his almost superhuman ability to get out of any situation makes me call bullshit on the people who call Elizabeth a Mary Sue when she doesn't manage half the feats of Jack.
