Troll Grade: D-
You're only passing due to this secret being a bit different from the recent ones we've had lately.

In case you aren't one? Subtext: You're doing it wrong and reading way too much into things that aren't really there. Like ship goggles...without the ships.

Because the Joker's main belief is in pure chaos for starters, not political affairs or global issues. This isn't even taking into consideration how long Batman has been a franchise.

The Joker representing the opposite of Batman's beliefs in killing and order? Yes, I can buy that. But reading into subtext that was never insisted upon by the writers in any fashion? Get back to me when you have links to interviews where Nolan states the Joker is a representation of the U.S. war on terrorism.

It's about as substantial as the Harmonian's "Symbolic Flight" theory otherwise.

I don't think you understand what they were talking about. There was an article saying that the dark knight was pro-bush propoganda, and pretty much tried to justify things the bush administration has done to stop terrorists, like wire tapping without a warrant and torture. I think you're mistaken in thinking that the Joker is representing the US, when in fact he's the one representing terrorism and Batman is the one representing the US. The fact the the Joker has nothing political to gain and just wants chaos only strengthens the point they were trying to make(?) by painting the terrorists in an even worse light than they've already given themselves.

Also, you need to keep in mind that the writers pointing out a political subtext they intentionally made would be bad for the movie. If they did intentially make this movie pro-war-on-terrorism they would not want to point that out.

I don't really know wheather the symbolism was intentional or not, but it's definitely there. It's still an enjoyable movie regardless IMO.

I thought his belief was that people are shits and need to be shown as such, repeatedly?

That's what he said to Batman near the end, anyway...I guess who the fuck knows.

Huh? There are a lot of troll secrets on FS but I don't really think this is one of them

I...what?

I think you're trolling, tbh.

nooooo

TROLL

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, someone is skeptical about a controversial secret! That must mean it's a troll.

[identity profile] hunter-san.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
IDK if troll, I read a similar article somewhere when it came out. I can see that it'd make people uncomfortable.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really surprised people would call me a troll over this secret. It's not like I said that it IS an analogy, only that I read about it and that the thought that it was made to push anti terrorism propaganda sucks.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
wooooww i don't even know where to start.

i am drunk so i can't

words

even if that was true or more overt (like 300) you can't isolate a piece of fiction from the time it was created. not that it's right but you'll see a huge trend thorough-out fiction of similar tendenceis of parroting villains after the evil of the particular time it was creatied

[identity profile] formula-410.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
This made me imagine what a Batman movie would have been like during the Red Scare. My mental image of the Joker being painted as a Commie is hilarious.

[identity profile] the-kumquat.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, the Joker as a commie would be the best thing ever. It's so nonsensical, it's just....
The only thing I can think of is if he starts acting like some weird Robin Hood figure, stealing from the bourgeois give to the oppressed lower classes. Only because he's crazy he'll do stuff like steal a million guns and give them to an orphanage or something. Or take lingerie to a battered women's shelter.

>:\ IDK about a terrorist analogy, but that movie was not senseless action.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Bah, as if the US nowadays would be that willing to identify a US-born terrorist (yes I know we know nothing about where Joker is from but in the comics he's mentioned being American).

Granted, his actions in the movie would probably classify him as one, and it would be politically slanted given that anarchy is a political movement (although he represents a fringe element rather than the Emma Goldman-style sort), but you have to think that the American government is REALLY fucked as to who it terms terrorists these days. I'd bet that the white Americans who bombed the Oklaholma City federal building back in the day would have a shitton of excusers on Fox if that happened today, and no one would want to call them terrorists.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah...I've heard about that, too, but I don't know if I buy it as an intentional theme.

In any case, I don't think the only alternative is that it's a "senseless action movie." It's a movie you can enjoy as a straightforward superhero action flick, but I think Christopher Nolan generally gives thought to more than just what's on the surface, or at least creates that appearance, and that makes a lot of his movies somewhat open to discussion.

[identity profile] johnnyabatti.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Man, Heath's Joker was so sexy and I'm not even sorry.

[identity profile] masked-creator.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't let it get to you OP. There are movie critics out there who say that about almost every movie just to bitch about their political opinions. They hardly focus on the movie itself and go on rants about whatever's going on in politics now instead. It gets rather annoying if you ask me.
ext_19953: (introduce a little anarchy)

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
it's not

I've run into people saying that before, and those people are idiots scrambling for relevancy. You could make an argument for the Joker being a terrorist, minus the political agenda (CAN an anarchist be a terrorist? Maybe. Probably) but the US government, especially the Bush government that ran the country when this movie was made, cannot legitimately be compared to fucking Batman.

[identity profile] arcadiaego.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I remember articles along that line. I thought it was more symbolic of how we feel powerless against all the insane stuff going on in the world that we're confronted with 24/7. Giving into chaos might actually seem quite appealing. That's why it was so unsettling that the Joker wasn't actually truly defeated.
