Troll Grade: D-
You're only passing due to this secret being a bit different from the recent ones we've had lately.

In case you aren't one? Subtext: You're doing it wrong and reading way too much into things that aren't really there. Like ship goggles...without the ships.

Because the Joker's main belief is in pure chaos for starters, not political affairs or global issues. This isn't even taking into consideration how long Batman has been a franchise.

The Joker representing the opposite of Batman's beliefs in killing and order? Yes, I can buy that. But reading into subtext that was never insisted upon by the writers in any fashion? Get back to me when you have links to interviews where Nolan states the Joker is a representation of the U.S. war on terrorism.

It's about as substantial as the Harmonian's "Symbolic Flight" theory otherwise.

The London riots (which have obviously now spread beyond London) aren't a political affair though. At least, not for the rioters. The riots started at a protest, sure. And it's debateable whether the violence that first erupted at the protests was initiated by protesters themselves or just the standard lowlifes who turn up at any crowded event looking to start trouble. But there is absolutely nothing political about it anymore - it's a huge network mob of people who have seen the police being ineffectual in stopping these crimes and have seen an opportunity to steal and destroy other people's property without getting caught. They're used a valid complaint to serve their own greed - that protest could have been about anything, it doesn't matter to the rioters, most of them probably don't even know what it was about.

thanks for taking the time to respond. i do see your point about the rioters motives, but i think that the political climate (education cuts, for example) is a part of the reason these riots are going on.

I don't think you understand what they were talking about. There was an article saying that the dark knight was pro-bush propoganda, and pretty much tried to justify things the bush administration has done to stop terrorists, like wire tapping without a warrant and torture. I think you're mistaken in thinking that the Joker is representing the US, when in fact he's the one representing terrorism and Batman is the one representing the US. The fact the the Joker has nothing political to gain and just wants chaos only strengthens the point they were trying to make(?) by painting the terrorists in an even worse light than they've already given themselves.

Also, you need to keep in mind that the writers pointing out a political subtext they intentionally made would be bad for the movie. If they did intentially make this movie pro-war-on-terrorism they would not want to point that out.

I don't really know wheather the symbolism was intentional or not, but it's definitely there. It's still an enjoyable movie regardless IMO.

Not disagreeing with you about possible subtext, just wanted to say that if by justifying torture you're referring to the scene where the Joker goads Batman into beating him up, I don't think we're supposed to read it as good and righteous, since that was what the Joker wanted him to do, which was abandon his principles. And I don't remember this part of the movie all that well, but although the surveillance thing works, doesn't Lucius shut it down because he feels terrible about it? I don't think the movie was supporting any of that stuff.

[identity profile] xerxes92.livejournal.com 2011-08-12 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't actually sure about the torture thing. It's been a really long time since I've seen the Dark Knight and I couldn't remember if there was any torture or not.

I thought his belief was that people are shits and need to be shown as such, repeatedly?

That's what he said to Batman near the end, anyway...I guess who the fuck knows.

And yet you offer no examples to back up your claims, no references to interviews, and nothing of substance. Only to point fingers when people ask for information to back your point up. Funny how that works.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Huh? There are a lot of troll secrets on FS but I don't really think this is one of them

[identity profile] xelestri.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I...what?

I think you're trolling, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, someone is skeptical about a controversial secret! That must mean it's a troll.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
it's not even controversial it's just stupid

[identity profile] hunter-san.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
IDK if troll, I read a similar article somewhere when it came out. I can see that it'd make people uncomfortable.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really surprised people would call me a troll over this secret. It's not like I said that it IS an analogy, only that I read about it and that the thought that it was made to push anti terrorism propaganda sucks.
