Tough you hear a lot about the wank, I guess I've been lucky enough that when I think about fandom my first thoughts are about all the nice people (and the girls who like slash(and the guys who like ponies)).

:) I hope you can be yourself on your everyday life soon.

I sympathize. As stupid and ridiculous as it feels to say it, I honestly don't know what would have become of me if not for Sailor Moon fandom in the 90s.

That's not stupid at ALL. I feel the same way (about another fandom). :)

Get new friends. Bigots don't deserve friends.

Sometimes it can be really difficult to find people who aren't bigots tough... I don't recall meeting anyone in my life who wasn't a homophobe(well, except people who are gay and can't hide it, but if you're closeted you tend to avoid them).

If you don't make do with people that are bigots but otherwise friendly the loneliness can drive you crazy.

Glad you found some support, wherever it might have come from.

Also, while you can't pick your family (although hopefully you either aren't living with them or have an exit plan), surely you can find some more tolerant or open-minded RL friends? Even when I was living in the Deep South, there were always a few of us freaks to band together.

Fandom is just like the rest of society, it can be totally full of wankers.

That being said, I understand. It's easier to choose friends online than in real life sometimes. And I wish more parents would unconditionally accept their kids for who they are, even if it's something they can't understand.

Rock on, OP. I was in the same place as you, sixteen years ago - but I promise you that it can get better. You will pay fandom back by getting the hell out of where you are someday, having a fabulous real life in a friendlier city or country, and remembering to take time to encourage other closeted gay people on the internet.

Hang in there, OP. I'm rooting for you.

Someday everyone will learn to accept and respect the others' choices.

I'm glad fandom has been a supportive place for you. :) And good luck with real life -- it may never be easy, but I bet that eventually, you'll be able to surround yourself with people who will love you for you are.

I have the same problem (except my friends don't care, but my parents are really homophobic). Fandom and the internet is my safe place, too.

I'm planning on coming out soon, though, because being in the closet is driving me crazy. Not good for my mental health, I tell you.

I'm gay too, OP. The safe thing to do in this situation is just to not tell your parents. They might do something drastic like kick you out or something, so at the moment it's best to wait until you're living on your own to tell them.
