CoS isn't my favorite, but I've never understood the hate, either.

That's kind of funny, because just yesterday I was tidying up my room and I found my old battered copy of CoS and was like "Oh man, this is one of my favorites! I'll be re-reading that posthaste". I didn't know it was so disliked either! (but yeah, the movie kind of sucked a bit)

I always liked CoS, probably because there were so many bits of it that actually creeped me the hell out. And I recently rewatched the movie, and found it surprisingly enjoyable.

That said, Dobby warning Harry to stay out of school still makes no fucking sense to me unless Dobby can SEE THE FUTURE.

Haters to the left, man. Chamber of Secrets will always be my favorite book in the series. When I was little and it was first released, it was the closest thing to a ~scary~ book I'd ever read -- I would rewind my cassette tapes over and over just to hear Jim Dale's basilisk-in-the-pipes voice because it scared the poop out of me and I fucking loved it. It also sets up the whole horcrux plot a whole five books before it becomes otherwise relevant, which I think is pretty clever.

Plus, it has Gilderoy Lockhart, Five-Time Winner of the Witch Weekly Most Charming Smile Award. And the movie has Deep Shakespearean Actor Kenneth Branagh prancing around being Lockhart. How can anyone hate that?

I think the problem with COS is that nothing really earth shattering happens. I mean, in 1 you get the start, 3 you get Sirius, 4 Voldemort returns, 5 Order of the Phoenix and all that stuff, 6 Dumbledore Dies (I personally dislike this book), and 7, well duh.

2 just sorta exists in it's own little vacuum, I mean later books make it more important, but for a while it was just sorta, there.

I hadn't re-read CoS in YEARS and when I finally did a month or so ago, I had a new appreciation for it. Not for the compelling storyline or anything, but because Gilderoy Lockhart is fucking HILARIOUS and the idea of cutting up almost human-formed plants to cure people is creepy and I'm so happy JKR went there.

CoS was the first HP book I read - PS was sold out when my mother decided to buy HP for me - and I instantly fell in love with it, but in hindsight it IS my least favourite and I can't even put my finger on why.
But I'm absolutely terrified of spiders, so that might be part of it.
Okay, and I didn't like Dobby in the beginning.

The book is a bit slow at parts but I think it's the best straightforward mystery of all the books. I've come to appreciate it a lot after re-reads.

And well, any of the movies are better than GoF.

CoS was the first book I read in the series and continues to be both my favorite book and movie. I love just how much impact it has on the entire story arc and yet it seemed so simple when it first came out.

What? People don't like CoS? I'd say it's one of my favorites, but I have a feeling I've said that about every book in the series at some point o.o. I derive way too much amusement from the updates on the Mandrakes maturation throughout the book.

CoS is my favorite book! And not even because of nostalgia or anything - I read them all a couple weeks before OotP came out so I wasn't exactly a little kid or anything. It's a masterwork of foreshadowing and does an amazing job of fleshing out the mood of the wizarding world.

I never knew that! I actually read CoS before Philosopher's Stone after I got the 2nd book for my tenth birthday. I even read PoA before I finally read the first one. xD So CoS has a special place in my heart.
