I have the same problem. All That isn't nearly as funny-- it has its moments but I remember being dead with laughter. It's still fun to watch though.
Keenan and Kel was still pretty good though.
I was always meh with Clarissa...

Watching the Rugrats though was just painful. Holy crap did I want to bash my head off a wall. Granted, I was watching the "newer" episodes so maybe that's why. I'm still convinced that The Mega Diaper Babies episode, the episode where they have the haunted house, the episode with the scary robot doll Chuckie and Tommy battle, and others are brilliant, but I have yet to watch them...

Odd. Usually when I watch shows I loved when I was young, I still like them.

Maybe I just had great taste as a kid. Or maybe I'm just still that childish. Either way, I find no reason to be bothered with this. I used to eat sand as a kid, doesn't mean I still like doing this now. It's one of those things you look back on and laugh at how stupid you were.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I refuse to believe Clarissa was not flawless.

This going to show my age, but the show that makes me scratch my head and go "why did I watch this again...?" is Full House. A lot of shows I used to like are still relatively decentish, or I can survive with the Nostalgia goggles on, but Full House? Nooot so much...

Incorrect; 90's Nick is still awesome. In fact, I actually enjoy Clarissa more now than I did when I was a kid. Go figure.

[identity profile] sharkshark.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same about most of the things I watched as a kid. Every once in a while, I'll decide to rent a disk or two of an old TV show I loved, and think it's the greatest idea ever to rewatch every episode. Then it's just boring and I return the disks after I watched three episodes.

The exception is the Powerpuff Girls, which I started watching again two weeks ago and damn, I am hooked.

ARE YOU ME, ANON?

Ironically, I still dig Clarissa repeats, but the rest of the 90s are All That block is painful to watch for me. I find All That is dated , the animation for Doug crass and unsophisticated and, having never seen Kenan and Kel first run, I never understood why people were crazy about the (not funny, to me) "I put the screw in the tuna" bit.

[identity profile] musikfurcats.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The same thing happened to me.

I don't think I really have nostaglia glasses but a lot of 90's Nick held up well, especially Clarissa, Kenan and Kel and Adventures of Pete and Pete. As someone said, now I am in my late 20s, I can also get some jokes that zip by my head at 12. And I still like those shows at my age and I am the type that get hella embarrassed that I used to like it.

Although I do agree All That didn't age that well. It's humor rely a lot of lolrandom, which is popular for kids. My friends and I still dig the Goodburger skits though.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The shows with real people are the ones that tend to let me down. I still freaking love all the cartoons I liked when I was a kid.

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Clarissa is weird to watch, because I was in elementary school when I watched her, and I looked up to her like mad because she was this super cool older girl. And now that I'm 25, I still want to look at her that way and it doesn't work. XD Her and Ferg still remind me of me and my brother, though. And Sam used to be a huge crush of mine, and now he shows up and I just laugh because he's SO painfully 90s. But I still absolutely enjoy the show, I just enjoy it differently.

All That's still great, Kenan and Kel is still great. Doug was never one of my favorites, but I have a newfound appreciation for it now that I realize that Doug and Roger were both voiced by Billy West (how did I not notice that as a kid?!). And I recognize a lot of the pop culture references in the show, now, which is nice.

You know, I think the early seasons of All That still holds up. That little girl did the best Ross Perot impression I've ever seen.

[identity profile] earthtojendell.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I feel this way about some of the old stuff I watched as a kid, but for me there are a couple of shows that I'm SO impressed with (TaleSpin, is the one I'm thinking of now) that I'm impressed with my taste as a kid. :)

[identity profile] shinyhappypanic.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
ugh, I'm having the same problem these days! I still think kenan and kel is funny, thank goodness, but I tried to watch an episode of CEIA and it was just. so. corny.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
LOL The Nostalgia Critic made a career out of this. But yes, I feel the same with A LOT of shows or movies or....*facepalm* musicians I thought were BRILLIANT when I was younger.
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (so what?)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure why this is a secret, realizing the shit you liked as a kid was maybe not as good as you remembered it is kind of a normal aspect of growing older

Though I did watch Good Burger for the first time since I saw it in the theatre earlier this year and I fucking loved it. I don't give a shit what anyone says, that movie is funny.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
As a little kid, I adored things like All Dogs Go To Heaven: The TV series and Mystic Knights of Tir Da Nog. Nowadays I look back and wonder if the only reason I liked these things were for the theme songs.

[identity profile] zoey-says.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
It really depends on the show for me. There are some shows that will be timeless to me and will always be awesome because of the nostalgic factor. I watch those shows remembering how and why I loved it. Others? Eh, I see it with my grown up jaded outlook and find it lame or cheesy. Usually shows I watched with my family that I didn't care for that much anyways.

I watched All That when I was a teen and found most of it hilarious. I couldn't stomach Carrissa though, but this was after watching (and getting sick of) Sabrina.

[identity profile] 365reasonswhy.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
This happened to me with Blossom (although I didn't have to see it again to realize how ridic it was in retrospect) and sadly, Quantum Leap. I still love that show for what it was in its time, but omg it's so heavy-handed with the messages of the week.

[identity profile] immaculate.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Try Roundhouse. You will not be disappointed. The jokes are dated but the humor is still awesome.

I actually really liked Hey Arnold again upon a second watch. It had some "Oh God, this is so silly," but overall it held up pretty well. I really liked the Christmas special where Helga gives up her Christmas present to help Arnold out. But I can't imagine what it's like to watch Clarissa Explains It All as an adult and not a 7 year old girl. XD

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Every time I've gone back to watch old shows I've found they stood the test of time - Powerpuff Girls, ReBoot, X-Men, Ren & Stimpy. Idk maybe I just got lucky. Also I didn't like live-action much as a kid. :P
