This is my least favorite of John's books, I barely even finished it. I love his other works but this one just didn't catch my eye like the others...

[identity profile] library-of-sex.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I was gonna say the same thing. It's the first that I read cuz I'd heard so many rave reviews, and it was boring and seemed too much like pointless navel-gazing. All his other books feel more genuine and emotionally-engaging, IMO.

*shrug* he is smug in his tone, pretty much always. sometimes the books are good anyway, sometimes not. Catherines was personally my favorite.

OP

Haha, Paper Towns was actually recommended to me early last year by my freshman roommate, who turned out to be a total cunt. Anyway, she also that she hated "Katherines", so now I'm thinking I should really check that one out.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-30 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't like it much either. The main characters were unlikable and after the initial couple of chapters, the plot got ridiculous and annoying. It also didn't help that he missed he boat on a lot of details about Orlando; ones that he wrote in a way that came across as...well, smug.

Sucks because I really enjoyed some of his other stuff.

[identity profile] ladyyuna07.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
You're allowed to not like his books and still be a nerdfighter. John's said for ages it's not a requirement.

For ages I haven't been into Hank's music and it's only recently that I've found a few songs that I liked. I'm still a nerdfighter, I'm just not into everything they create.

(Paper Towns is a decent book, but all of his male characters are that: teenage boys. And I find teenage boys insufferable) (I much prefer Katherines, myself)

[identity profile] greenhoodloxley.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
This. Most of his books seem to feature a slightly nerdy teenage who meets/likes A Really Unusual Girl.

[identity profile] noapologiesx.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
If you want to be a Nerdfighter you are one. That's always been the only rule. You don't have to like John's books, you don't have to like Hank's music, you don't have to watch other famous YouTubers, etc.

It's okay that you didn't like the book. Really. :)

[identity profile] copperiisulfate.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
maybe it was because i read that one right after looking for alaska that i kind of couldn't go near his stuff for a while. can only take manic pixie dream girls in low doses, and he seems to have a thing for that trope

[identity profile] santagrover.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
his writing is pretty predictable, yeah (nerdy boy chases girl of his dreams employing sidekick best friend, who is incidentally of some sort of unique multicultural descent which makes it ok if he wants to crack racist jokes)

but i still like it :)

b-b-but the mountain goats are AWESOME

[identity profile] killer-penguin.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you anon. I love nerdfighters, the vlogs, the humanitarianism, the nerdy jokes, etc.... but can't stand -any- of John's books (I've read all of them, even the short stories, in hopes that I'll change my mind), and I've gotten to the point where I automatically skip the videos where Hank sings because I find his music repetitive and bleh.

I don't think that's really the point of nerdfighteria though. People are allowed to have different tastes in media. I adore the Green brothers... just not their books/music

[identity profile] rocketgirl2.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think John Green would be offended if you didn't like his books, because Nerdfighteria is all about evaluating things and finding what you like and finding other people who like that same thing.
Like most people here, my favorite book of his was Katherines, but I did enjoy Paper Towns as well - no, the plot wasn't super original, nor were the characters that amazing, but in general, I feel it encourages readers to think more than the vast majority of teen lit, and for that, I applaud him.

[identity profile] library-of-sex.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
An Abudance of Katherines is my fave, too, Caryn! It was warm and genuine and funny while Paper Towns just seemed to be trying waaaaaay too hard to seem introspective and soul-searching. I did think it was technically well-written though, and I remember loving the first fast-paced chapter so much.

Just jumping on the bandwagon and saying that I also did not enjoy PT all that much, and Katherines is my favorite.

It's totally okay to not like things, as long as you're able to separate your dislike of that thing from a dislike of that person.

As others have said, liking John's books/Hank's music definitely aren't criteria for being NFs. If you are an individual who appreciates knowledge and general nerdyness, and wish to adopt that label, then you are a Nerdfighter, simple as that.

As always, DFTBA :)

[identity profile] tastylogic.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't love PT the way I wanted to, mainly because the ending just pissed me off. Katherines and Alaska are better, imho. But don't worry, even if John found out that you didn't like any of his books he wouldn't mind. Not every nerdfighter can like the same things.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Don't have anything to say about the rest of the secret, but I'm reading Will Grayson, Will Grayson right now and I love it.

[identity profile] cyren-2132.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Paper Towns was the first John Green book I read, and I adored it. I particularly remember being kind of chilled when Q was going into the old mall or whatever it was by himself and thinking the worst. I don't know, it probably helps that I hadn't read his other stuff. Since then, I've enjoyed Katherine's but don't really have any desire to read Alaska, because -- much like Spot The Recycle Aaron Sorkin Line -- characters were already starting to feel too familiar, and just didn't want to read a THIRD book of John's Gary Stu (because let's be honest, here). Plus I'm pretty sure I got spoiled enough to lose all interest anyway.

I DO love the Looking for Alaska song though.

[identity profile] nettlecoat.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
The abandoned mall scene freaked me the fuck out, not gonna lie. I was also creeped out when he was looking for unfinished subdivisions or whatever and was thinking about finding her days-old dead body. So even though the book has its flaws, I liked it because it got that reaction from me.

But I agree that his books and characters are pretty formulaic. I haven't read Alaska either, and I'm still on the fence about whether or not I want to.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Thankfully we don't have to love ever book written by our favorite authors. I know almost nothing about that book, but from the little you've mentioned, I don't think I'd make it past the first chapter. It just doesn't sound like something that would engage my imagination enough.

[identity profile] allstarzs.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
I am having a hard time with it too because of my intense hatred of Margo. Seriously, I want to just kill the bitch.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
lol personally the main character's best friend (i forget his name... ben?) is at the top of my hit-list with the "hunny-bunnies" bullshit. i just... i can't.

(i'm the OP and i'm unanoning now because i don't care)

(Anonymous) 2011-08-30 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, after forcing myself to slog through Looking for Alaska, I'm having a hard time convincing myself to read anything else he's written, though I know I should.
