Aww, that sucks! I usually hate tutorials that have those kind of comments. You shouldn't let that ruin the fun you're getting out of the webcomic, though.

[identity profile] matitablu.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it always seemed to me that was her way to lighten things up in the tutorial rather than a legitimately condescending tome. Sorry it rubbed you the wrong way - I've actually often pointed people to her tuts because they are pretty accurate and straight to the point >.>;

[identity profile] goobbledigook.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really have anything against her and I think her comic is nice, but I'm glad I lost interest before it stopped updating.

Mainly it was because she linked to some webcomic made by a homophobic bigot or something, and when people called it to her attention she wrote a rant about how homophobic bigots are totally alright because you live in America and have nothing to worry about or whatever. I'm not about to pick a fight over opinions or tell other people what to think, but it sure made me not really interested in following her works anymore.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have any links about that? Or remember what the webcomic she linked to was called? The whole thing sounds like an entertaining read

[identity profile] goobbledigook.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure. The webcomic she linked to is Ratfist by Doug TenNapel.

Here is the link to her tumblr (http://alexds1.tumblr.com/post/6024196684/you-linked-ratfist-a-while-back-was-wondering-if). I must say however that I can't seem to find the link where she explicitly says the part about America and opinions so take that with a grain of salt - she might not have said it at all even tough I remember reading it.

I think she sounds incredibly naive here:

"If people don’t want to read his work because they disagree with him, that is totally understandable, but seeing people call him names and bash him for his deep-rooted beliefs seems hilariously, depressingly hypocritical to me.

To sum it up: if someone like Doug isn’t allowed to hold an opinion, then I don’t think anyone should be."

Nobody said he isn't allowed to hold an opinion. His opinions are offensive and hypocritical and people are right when they call him out on it. But she answered it herself: "I’ve done work for Doug".
Sounds like she doesn't want to screw up their deal. Oh well!

What did Doug say that was so horrifically bigoted? Just curious. I mean, I read one opinion he'd posted about animals that made me angry for days. I was thinking of the best, even-minded rebuttal, but by the time I came up with one, the original post had vanished (I suspect more than a few people were ahead of me).

I have met Doug and I have enjoyed his other works (Earthworm Jim and Ghostopolis to name two), but I found Ratfist dark and disappointing overall. A shame, really.

:/ well this is a shame, but thanks for the link though. I think what bothers me more is that most of people in the notes seem to agree with her too, including other webcomic artists I like.

I don't understand why having talent means you get a free pass from being a bigot. If it were any other person, then I'd bet more people would be angry.

WOW, I can't believe she would defend someone like that. Yes, he has a right to voice his opinion, but I also have the right to say his opinion is wrong. She really sounds like she's trying to smooth out his image and be all "he's okay guys, really" so that he will continue to offer her work.

I judge people based on who they choose to associate themselves with. If he's comfortable working with someone like him, I have to wonder about her judgement and morals. She seems so hypocritical here.

Eww, really? Wow, that just sours her to me even more. :\

Re: OP

[identity profile] goobbledigook.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
If you enjoy the webcomic I think you could try to separate the author from her behavior in the tutorials tough! So long as her attitude doesn't come across in the comics that is.

I need to correct myself in what I said on the first post tough, it's better if you just read what she said on the matter rather than to take my word for it. I will however, maintain that the attitude that anti-gay bigots have valid opinions and we should respect that they just happen to think gay people deserve less human rights is a pretty disgusting one.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, yeah, I remember that. I nearly unfollowed her on tumblr because of it, it made me so angry.

She also wrote something - though my memory's pretty bad - on how people shouldn't whine if society doesn't accept that they're trans or some bullshit. I mean she's still a great artist, but some of her views are... eeeeh.

[identity profile] saltintheoven.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna have to say YMMV on this one, because I've always really liked her tutorials. Is there anything specific you have in mind when you talk about her insisting you do something 'her way', OP? I remember her tutorials being mostly general anatomy stuff and I can't think of any explicit instructions beyond the same construction guidelines you find most places.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't recall the "do it my way" part of her tutorials. They always stood out as memorable to me because of the questions she puts in, to make you think about what you're drawing.

[identity profile] dragonalchemist.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The first tutorial I clicked on when I went to form my own opinion was explaining painting backgrounds; part of the directions states: "I have enough of the background done to fill in [character.] Never fill in your characters until you have roughed out your background, it will look like shit, guaranteed." (emphasis hers)

But then, in the comments, she says "Personally I don't think you should color the way I do, I take kind of a long time and anyways, everyone should develop their own style." So I'm not really sure what she's trying to accomplish with that. :/

[identity profile] x-expat.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I thought her tutorials were hilarious. And very accurate. And I didn't get any "Do it my way or your art will suck" vibes.

[identity profile] armistice-day.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Not that this has anything to do with your complaint, but the author is a man.

That aside, I always thought of the tone of his tutorials as being purposefully light! For me, the bits of snark thrown in seemed there to sort of diffuse the "I KNOW IT ALL AND NOW I WILL TELL YOU" sinking feeling that one might get when holding forth in a tutorial.
So yeah, another vote for hilarious and accurate here, but I hope you find some tutorials that do suit you!

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
The artist is a guy? Just my luck. I tried to figure that out before making this secret because I hate getting that wrong. There's a picture of them lying in the street on their deviantArt and I saw boobs, so. Are they trans or something (or was the photo just not of them)? Because through all my various diggings I have found absolutely zero personal imformation about the artist save for that one picture.

Actually -- since this wank comes up a lot with her -- she is cis female, and now identifies as female, though she was ambivalent about it in the past. (Hence the confusion every time she comes up in a public forum.)

I like her tutorials so I have nothing to say about that, but this is why I try to know as little as possible about my favorite authors/artists/musical artists/actresses (or actors). I don't want my possible (typical) negative feelings about them to interfere with my appreciation for their work.

[identity profile] duae.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I like knowing a little. Just because I don't want people to think I support hateful/wrong beliefs or actions. "Oh, Person X is awesome! I love their stuff!" "... you DO know they were just arrested for being naked in bed with a dozen naked 6 year olds, right?" "Uuuuuuh......"

[identity profile] rmg.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
making some flippant remarks in a light-hearted tutorial is totally equivalent to this

I understand that. I figure if one of my favorite authors/etc. has some behavior or scandal that is egregious enough to warrant reconsidering appreciating their work, I will hear about it whether I want to or not. I simply try not to find out anything about them on my own, because to be perfectly honest, I'm a pretty judgmental person. Everyone has their faults. Whether it's an affair, homophobic beliefs (or in this case, defending homophobes apparently), or even a childishly dramatic personality, to be honest I'd just rather not know.
