You're missing the point.

Rowling created a world where in-bred kids enter adulthood not being able to do basic maths and without a basic understanding of science; they look down upon and loathe muggles but never learn muggle history or read muggle literature. These aren't things we take for granted, these are the basic skills that people in the developed world require to function.

And you know what? Wizards also need to move fast and be plugged in and use lights, but they've got an apparently infinitely renewable resource called ~*~magic~*~ to do that for them, which we don't have. Having an infinitely renewable energy source effectively locks the wizarding world in the Middle Ages (complete with a book-7 Inquisition!), while our pathetic muggle selves are constantly forced to innovate and change because we've realized that our current energy sources are non-renewable and hurting the planet.

tl;dr: Rowling's backwards and xenophobic wizarding society is ~*~eco-friendly~*~ because of its sparkly magical infinitely renewable energy source which we don't have in the real world.

Um, and we aren't xenophobic? In the US, we're talking about building a literal wall between us and Mexico because of them Mexicans. Also, we still have sweatshops everywhere. But, yes, it's the wizarding world, who has the audacity to use magic (and they have to invent spells too, btw) instead of technology that are backwards. Because technology is totally a sound barometer to judge a culture.

The problem isn't with a lack of technology, it's with a lack of a basic education. And we do tend to judge culture and civilization by its understanding of maths, science and its dedication to arts and literature -- that's how we see societies like the ancient Egyptian and Mayan and such as cultured.

Hogwarts and its equivalents are the muggle equivalent of a school that only teaches kids how to use Wordpress and not anything else.

Magic is not equivalent to just using one form of technology. It can do anything, that's why they learn it. And, frankly, if you've ever have to sit through Bill Nye having to explain the greenhouse effect to grown-ups, you will once and forever realize: we don't learn that much.

I think we're at an impasse, because I believe that people can learn and change.

I love how the de facto comeback to any critique of any culture (fictional or otherwise, apparently) is "BUT PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES ARE [insert -ism] TOO"

So what? That doesn't automatically absolve everyone else

But what if the culture you're critique is America's????

Um, but this person was acting as if we were better. We're not.

And neither is Britain.
