Oh man, I'd love to know the story behind those two (like, what happened between them to make Keith get rid of the book?). I'm the same way with the books I have -- one in particular almost made me cry; a dedication from 1911, from a parent to their child, as a Christmas present.

Oh, and out of curiousity, what book is it?

I agree. I get confused with the shipping names sometimes. The combinations aren't that bad, but when the fandom comes up with totally odd names for shippings. Saunashipping from Warriors is a darn good example: makes absolutely no sense unless you've memorized all the hundreds of shippings and their names. (It's Firestar and Mistyfoot, if you were wondering.)

Hey, go move to a small hick town, and realize that they STILL use the old school weather updates. I stayed someplace in rural indiania (maybe illinois?) that had the old school weather channel updates because they just couldn't afford to update off the WeatherStar4000's. (or the cable provider just doesn't care enough to update the headend).

I agree when it comes to the people who over use the crap out of it, but in small doses it doesn't bother me.

And, yeah, Huggleglomp sounds like a really weird wizard elementary school or something.

You're missing the point.

Rowling created a world where in-bred kids enter adulthood not being able to do basic maths and without a basic understanding of science; they look down upon and loathe muggles but never learn muggle history or read muggle literature. These aren't things we take for granted, these are the basic skills that people in the developed world require to function.

And you know what? Wizards also need to move fast and be plugged in and use lights, but they've got an apparently infinitely renewable resource called ~*~magic~*~ to do that for them, which we don't have. Having an infinitely renewable energy source effectively locks the wizarding world in the Middle Ages (complete with a book-7 Inquisition!), while our pathetic muggle selves are constantly forced to innovate and change because we've realized that our current energy sources are non-renewable and hurting the planet.

tl;dr: Rowling's backwards and xenophobic wizarding society is ~*~eco-friendly~*~ because of its sparkly magical infinitely renewable energy source which we don't have in the real world.

Oh, alright then. I don't agree with the wizarding world being backwards, but last time I checked? Magic hadn't been invented yet, irl. So, yeah. Fictional world/real world. There's a difference.

I don't think the Wizarding World needs your staunch defence, anon.

There is a lot wrong with it, both intentionally and, I think, unintentionally. It also has its good traits, like any other society.

(And I hardly think Wizards can be lauded for being more economically friendly than Muggles when they're just doing what's natural and convenient.)

That is all a moot point considering that Muggles CAN'T use magic, so they don't have the privilege of being able to magically transport themselves somewhere without burning fossil fuels, etc. Good for the wizarding world for having powers that ordinary humans don't have and choosing to use them?

TB!5

[identity profile] copper-dimes.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
No kidding. Especially when there are multiple combinations for the same pairing or two characters with similar names that get shipped with another character. I get so confused when that crap happens. I hated this trend when it was used in the tabloids with celebrities, and I hate it in fandom.

HAHAHA oh wow
OK, a very classist and racist practically-medieval society isn't backwards because they're not causing as much harm to the environment. Of course they don't need to harm the environment for natural resources and fuel, they're FUCKING MAGIC!

[identity profile] tenebrais.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
How do you know wizards aren't irreparably damaging the environment with their magic? All that subverting causality can't be good for the fabric of space-time. Tempo-gravitational thinning is a serious issue affecting the entire universe that the wizarding world needs to get out of its cocoon and wake up to!
