From what I've heard of 3 and the 30 minutes I spent playing it at my sister's, I would get 2.

Sims 3 doesn't sound bad, and there are way more options for designing characters, but there's just SO MUCH to keep track of when it comes to gameplay. It felt more like I was just trying to keep my Sim alive and happy enough to continue doing basic functions rather than creating stories for them.

I *think* Sims 3 is more of an enforced Legacy house, where you just have that house in a neighborhood and you play THAT Sim (and any other Sims that join the family).

Wheareas, I think Sims 2 is a little more user-friendly when it comes to Sim!Needs, and I love that I can have a neighborhood of houses/families that each can be played separately and can also interact with the other houses. For instance, if Sim!Harry Potter invites Sim!Dean Winchester to his house, and they get into a huge fight, if I then go play the Winchester house for awhile, Dean would still be mad at Harry for the fight they had.

Also, if you're going to do Sims 2, I would recommend getting the NIghtlife and Seasons expansion packs. University and Apartment Life are okay (I don't have the others) but Nightlife and Seasons actually add to gameplay in all aspects, not just when a Sim goes to college or decides to live in an apartment.

Long comment is long, and I have to get ready for work, so I hope it makes sense.

"It felt more like I was just trying to keep my Sim alive and happy enough to continue doing basic functions rather than creating stories for them."

Oh good. I thought I was just bad at the game. xD I couldn't even get my Sim out of the house because they spent the entire time in the red.

Yeah, I think the straw that broke me on Sims 3 was "You've just been to work, and you need so many points to get promoted, oh, and HERE'S THIS EXTRA BOOK! Read it, too (and don't forget to make friends, get the required cooking/mechanical/body/whatever points, have fun and stay alive)!"

Plus, I don't really remember, but it seemed like there was more to keep track of when it came to relationships and aspirations.

But I feel *kind of* bad grousing about how hard Sims 3 is to manage when I mercilessly rolled my eyes at my dad for sticking with the original Sims because he just couldn't handle Sims 2.

(da) I'm surprised at this comment thread, cause I found 3 much easier than 2. The sims can actually take care of themselves for more than five seconds without your guidance in 3 - in 2 they will just play guitar or sit in the hottub until they're completely in the red, in 3 I found them skilling, exercising, cooking etc fairly reasonably without me telling them at all. 3 also eliminated the awful friend requirement for job promotions so I found jobs much simpler too.

I dunno, after achieving a certain level of wealth in 3 I just let them dick around on their own. In 2 I felt like I had to constantly micromanage just so they didn't piss themselves at work.

IA. The UI also added some handy buttons as well. There's a button on the work tab that will send them straight to work if they're supposed to be there. There's also a button on their portrait that will call them back home from where ever they are.

I suppose I can see how the wants could make it seem like there's more to do. I personally really like them. They're like little goals, but if I don't complete them that's not a big deal either.

I find that funny because I just played The Sims 1 last week for the first time in a long while, and it kicked my ass. IMO the games get easier the newer they are. TS3 in particular goes out of its way to minimize motive needs: got rid of comfort and environment + there's all the perks or whatever Sims can get like Steel Bladder that lock the bladder need. The original Sims had no weekends, no days off work/school, and no little aspiration cheaty objects to boost their moods.

Yeah, I definitely think I'm leaning towards 2. It'll be cheaper, run more smoothly on my computer, and seems like a good point to jump in. I can always try 3 later if I'm so inclined.

And thanks for the expansion suggestions! Hopefully I'll be able to find a bundle pack somewhere, but if not, I'll keep that in mind. :D

This is a fantastic visual, thank you so much.

(Also, thank you for letting me know other people put multi-fandom characters into the same neighborhoods in their Sims! Their wacky shenanigans are always more entertaining that way. :))

Hee, oh yes. I have an entire Fandom City. Before the last computer crash I had a giant, spired house surrounded by water (except for a 3-square-wide pathway) that became my Stargate Atlantis house, where everybody except Carson lived, because Carson had gone off to live in a hut surrounded by gardens with Neville Longbottom. Carson was the only one who didn't mind that Neville was a PlantSim. All the water at Atlantis House made that particularly lot really slow and jumpy, though.

But I was most disappointed about losing my SPN and Potter story lines. Castiel had become a Good Witch, because its the closest to an angel you can get, and he, Sam, Dean and the Harry Potter Trio were about to trek off (okay, be moved into) Goth Malfoy Manor, where lived Vamp!Draco and his daughter and lackeys, for an epic battle full of fighting, lightning, rainbows, bees and fire.

I also had finally gotten Sim!Esposito abducted by aliens so he and Ryan could raise a green little alien baby in the Castle fandom. *Sigh* I miss that neighborhood.

(If you're interested, for a while I did a few SPN-heavy Fandom City picspams: Sam and Dean move in. (http://cyren-2132.livejournal.com/389734.html), Castiel is created (http://cyren-2132.livejournal.com/413971.html) (Less of a picspam, more of a "Wow, that turned out really well!") and Castiel angels up (http://cyren-2132.livejournal.com/414790.html).)
