Also I don't think any of Harry's children or siblings died in the books. Since he you know, didn't have any (:
[That all being said, I don't think people have to be animal people, I would just like for them to recognize the importance that they can hold in their owners lives]

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)Doesn't matter if Fred wasn't Harry's brother or child, he was that to characters we also cared about. People can live the rest of their lives without really recovering from losing a child. I've never known anyone to have that response to losing an animal, even though it can be a very devastating loss.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 07:00 am (UTC)(link)I have a much harder time connecting to people for various reasons and I've had a lot death (aunt/uncle mainly) in the last few years. Some of whom I was close to when I was younger. I still grieve more over my cat's death than theirs......they died of old age or disease, mainly, so it wasn't unexpected entirely and I hadn't been close to them for years.
Unlike my cat who was there for me every day, a source of joy and fun in my life, who made me smile and laugh, and never, but never, broke my trust by repeating what I'd told her (unlike various friends and relatives, god, I got trust issues...especially over that.....)

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)So i think it's horribly narrow-minded to say that a pet's death isn't something people grieve over for life. I'm guessing you don't know many people who own pets? I know a girl who's dog died years ago, and she still comes home with dog food before remembering her dog is no longer alive. My own sister had a cat who died a year ago and she still cries about it sometimes. Not everybody likes sharing their grief, especially if it's over a pet because they might be afraid of being ridiculed or mocked by others, but it's definitely there and many people never get over it.
For many people, a pet is a part of the family, and is far more than just something to feed, bathe and walk. They help their owners through life, they are there for their owners when they are sick (my own dog helped me through my depression and was the only reason I managed to get out of the house on some days). And they love their owners no matter what their owner looks like, what their hobbies are, what their personality is like, etc. They don't judge like people judge. And while friends might come and go, a pet will always be there for you no matter what.

Also - the story is from Harry's POV, so inevitably we're more likely to experience deaths the way he would. Fred was Ron's brother and Molly/Arthur's kid, but since Harry knew him only as his friend's cool brother, it's not quite as devastating in the moment.
