(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 12:22 am (UTC)(link)(though if there are a lot of sexist arseholes in your fandom - how do they square it with - who I imagine are - the popular characters of Arya and Daenerys?)

Tbh I always thought Arya gets a free pass because she isn't just boyish, she's a kid. She's still mostly operating outside the boundaries of what it means to be female in Westeros (and the plot carefully prevented her from doing so; what if she was stuck at court post Ned's death as well as Sansa?), and at this point I don't know if her story will ever lead her there, given she's busy becoming a ninja in

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 11:10 am (UTC)(link)Boyish means like a boy and implies that certain traits are masculine.
Yes, it does, and in Arya's time some of her traits would be considered incredibly masculine. I don't see why this is a problem. If a girl is a tomboy, she has traits commonly associated with boys, i.e. she is boyish. If you were saying this about a woman wearing pants and bringing home the dough in our time I'd raise an eyebrow at you, but saying it about a convention-breaking woman in Arya's time? What exactly is the issue?

-get upset about what s essentially semantics
-then claim use of a perfectly common word is sexist.
Yup, sounds like F!S to me.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 12:07 am (UTC)(link)As far as her becoming a leader, I can see her becoming like Cersei later on, figuring out how to use her sex to get into a position of power.
