(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 12:07 am (UTC)(link)As far as her becoming a leader, I can see her becoming like Cersei later on, figuring out how to use her sex to get into a position of power.

I think it easily can be when she's being loathed for stuff she did while male characters are frequently given the Draco in Leather Pants (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DracoInLeatherPants) treatment even after doing much worse than Sansa, and out of overt malice. Most of the stuff Sansa still gets criticized for was done out of plain 13-year-old naivete (for example, she inadvertently gave Cersei information that helped Cersei cause a lot of bad things because she still believed the court was noble).

All Sansa did was tell Cersei that Ned was sending her and Arya back to Winterfell. She didn't know about the incest or about Ned's plans to have Cersei arrested, and she did everything she could to save Ned's life. I think it's ridiculous (and yes, misogynistic) that more people seem to blame her for Ned's death than they do Littlefinger, Ned (who basically doomed himself by telling Cersei what he knew), or even Joffrey.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 07:14 am (UTC)(link)The Sansa and Cat hate is misogynistic to me because all the characters in the books make stupid, bone-headed mistakes with a lot of them suffering and dying for it, but it's the female characters who continue to get the most vitriolic hate thrown at them for it.
Anyway, as far as the books are concerned, Sansa has already learned more than enough about trusting people and the truth of politics, and with Littlefinger's help, she's going to become a lot smarter and be a pretty powerful potential player in the game.

I just cannot with the hate that characters like Brienne, Sansa and Catelyn get from some sections of the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 04:00 am (UTC)(link)SPOILERS FOR AGoT, ACoK, ASoS, & AFfC:
Littlefinger is currently grooming Sansa to become a skilled player in the game of thrones. She's poised to become the Queen-consort of the Vale by marrying Henry Hardyng, her cousin Robert's heir to the Eyrie. She could also inherit the crown of the North from her late brother Robb and make an alliance with her uncle the current Lord of Riverrun, effectively making her ruler of at least three kingdoms.
A popular ship is that of Jon and Sansa (he has a thing for redheads, she has a thing for noble hero types) and if Jon really is the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna he could very well end up on the Iron Throne as King of the Seven Kingdoms with Sansa as his Queen, or possibly Dany as his official wife and co-ruler but Sansa acting as the bearer of the royal heirs.
OR she could just end up marrying Tommen I 'spose, but I doubt he'll be King by the end of the series, though that would be an interesting twist.
END SPOILERS
I've always loved Sansa and I honestly think she has one of the most realistic reactions to the trials she goes through for her society and era, while her foil/sister Arya has probably the most insanely unrealistic (fun and interesting to read, but totally unbelievable for a myriad of reasons)
I like Sansa and Arya equally actually because I think they compliment each other nicely, it's just unfortunate that Sansa gets so much hate for the crime of behaving like an actual pampered and very young daughter of a nobleman in a medieval world would. She's just a scared little girl having to go through puberty at the worst possible time and being forced to adjust to a world that is NOTHING like she was prepared for by the songs and fairy tales of her childhood.
Her role is so important to the story because the major theme of her character is that as interesting as a world like this is to read about, it would suck tremendously to ACTUALLY live and breath in it. A Song of Ice and Fire is ALL about deconstructing the fantasy genre and Sansa's journey serves to codify that mission.

And I agree with one of the above commenters. Sansa has an excuse for acting the way she does. Ned Stark doesn't, and though he's a decent guy I want to say DO YOU UNDERSTAND YOUR CHILDREN AT ALL? OR HOW POLITICS TENDS TO WORK? OR ANYTHING? That and I must have missed something major in the show because I swear he must have had a copy of the script in order to make that leap in logic that was "He has blond hair so he must be a bastard therefore Cersei and Jaime pushed my son out a window."

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 11:10 am (UTC)(link)Now when I dislike a character, it's a little distant and vague, if that makes any sense. I leave room to change my mind. If she starts to grow as a character, I'll probably start to like her.
But I still vote for Danaerys to get the throne back, even though I don't think it's all that possible at this point. By the time she gets there, she's going to have the experience of caring for a group of people, and she's already shown compassion and determination and courage. Sansa hasn't really shown any of those qualities except for determination to get what she wants even at her own sister's expense. You know, these stories are a total bummer... I changed my mind, at least for a moment. I want Tyrion Lannister to be king. He'd bring some fun to the world along with all his practical thinking.
I think the problem with a lot of people in fandom is that they don't understand how to properly express a dislike for the character. You get a whole mob mentality going on, where people stop thinking for themselves and start agreeing with everyone else. And mobs tend to be irrational, which could certainly bring the whole misogyny thing into play. But don't have an opinion just to spite them. Have it because you think it's absolutely true. There are a few people out there who listen.

That being said, I don't understand all the hate she gets. I understand hating pretty much every single character in this fandom, even the ones I love, because most ASOIAF characters have done despicable or at least highly questionable things that you could theoretically hate them for. I definitely understand hating Catelyn (not because of Jon, but because of her entire personality&attitude). But Sansa? I get disliking her because she's a shallow brat, especially in GoT, but hating her? It's just weird.
