Hell yah!

I...agree and disagree. Yes he has a high tolerance for pain/is stoic and what not...but he's also shown, in the freaking series to be pretty damn smart. [Iirc, he turned down joining MENCA] So yes, he's not stupid enough ignore his own injuries...in most situations.

However, by that same token, he does put his team's well being before his own, so there are some situtions where I could see him ignoring his injuries if he had a good reason too. Namely if he had to do something to take care of his team/Atlantis that, for whatever reason, wouldn't give him the time or resources to take of that and still get what needed to be done done.

tl;dr: I agree with you for the most part, unless it's a choice between his well being vs Atlantis'/His team's with not middle ground

(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
MENCA?

[identity profile] iwasanartist.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
They meant Mensa, the international high IQ society. (mensa.org)

This, I do apologize for the misspelling, I'm on my phone so it's a little hard to type ^^;;

(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
...How is them making a typo on their phone lulzy? I mean, yeah misspelling mensa is kind of but...um. Otherwise? Not seeing it.

Totally agree with you. There are plenty of extenuating circumstances, and it's even canon. There are times when he can't do anything about whatever is wrong and must soldier on, or will sacrifice himself for others.

But there seem to be quite a few fic where for no reason other than for there to be trauma later, John avoids the infirmary even when there's no emergency, doesn't tell the team about an injury when they could clearly help him, Drama for the sake of Drama.

These are the actions where I think the writer unwittingly makes him act stupidly when we know he is not stupid.

In season 5, after the building collapses on the Team, Keller wanted Sheppard to have surgery, but he went AMA to go save Teyla.

So, yeah. He does ignore his injuries, even ones serious enough to require surgery. Which some could argue is stupid.

[identity profile] iwasanartist.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but that's not really the same as *hiding* his injuries.
popkin16: (☊ oh can you comfort me)

[personal profile] popkin16 2011-09-14 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
No, but it doesn't seem to be a big leap to ignore his injuries (despite others knowing), to hiding it completely.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm curious, it's also a pretty common trope that John will go to great lengths to avoid the infirmary.

I can think of him whinging about not needing to be rolled to the infirmary in Conversion, leaving AMA in Search and Rescue for the purpose of Rescue, but otherwise he seems to have no trouble going to get himself checked out. (thinking of when Ronon whaps him and he needs stitches) Any examples otherwise?
popkin16: (☆ here for a moment & then i was gone)

[personal profile] popkin16 2011-09-14 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I can't recall anytime that John purposely avoided the infirmary. He may put off getting medical attention if he feels something needs to be done (which means hiding or at least ignoring his injuries, ~temporarily), but I don't think we ever see him not go to the infirmary if it's necessary.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
For the most part he seems to ignore his injuries only when there are outside circumstances that make it hard to get it taken care of right then and there - particularly if one of his team is hurt or in trouble. For example, AMA where he went to save Teyla. Maybe it's just me but that's not really the same mentality as actively hiding/ignoring your injuries when there's no outside reason.

He could have gotten it taken care of right then and there - Keller was right there, and preparing for surgery, I think. It was really his choice to ignore the need for surgery and go find Teya - commendable, but not the smartest decision to be made in concern for his health.

I agree, it's not the same when there's no outside reason. And I don't mean to make it sound like I think Sheppard is stupid - he's not.

Oh, no no - I think I misunderstood what you were saying! Sorry, it's totally my fault then. ^^;;

Yay! Another Stargate Secret! And I completely agree with you.

Also, criticism is just NOT done. I don't even leave comments anymore for fear of offending.

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Not in this fandom, but... that last part, yeah. I originally wrote original fiction, and people are a lot freer with concrit in that world. When I got into fandom, I would say "I love ____ about your story, but ____ part is pretty implausible to me and pulled me out of things a bit. Maybe if you ____?"

But I soon realized even that (which was mild on my former planet) was often taken to mean "U GARBAGEZ U KAN'T RITE RAAAAAAAAAAREKDJSLK!" or something.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
The thing is, when fan fiction is out there, it's done. Aside from fixing minor typos, odds are extremely high it's not going to be revised. It has, in essence, been put out for publication. Telling an author "if you changed this part of a story, it would work better" does no good for a fic author, because the story is done, and they probably won't be telling that story again. This is in contrast to original fic, where posting it online is often not its final publication, and specific critiques of the story can, in fact, be used to improve the story.

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
I revise constantly. I'd love a very thorough beta, but sadly the few people I know who actually do that beta rarely, because really doing it is a lot of painstaking work. So I put things up, but months later notice awkward wording or weird inconsistencies in the story and fix them. Personally, I feel there's no point in leaving something up that I know is of low quality.

I have so many stories that it's hard to get around to revising them all, though. One of these days on a long weekend I'm going to go through everything.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
DA, that's great and all but that's *you*. Not everyone in fandom has that stance, nor should you expect everyone to follow your standards. Does that mean that a lot of fanfiction slips through the cracks with flaws that could be fixed? Yes, but it's never going to be published [most of it anyways] and the majority of people in fandom don't want to put that level of effort into something that's never going to 'see the light of day' as it were.

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Giving concrit doesn't mean expecting the author to revise though. It shows that you're engaged with the story enough to care about it. It doesn't mean the author has to do anything -- or agree with your views.

On one side, I agree. Once it's done and posted that's it and comments aren't going to change or help the story. But if I were writing a lot of fic, and I was making the same mistakes over and over, sometimes it would be nice to know so I could improve. Critiques aren't necessarily useful for the critiqued work, but they are useful when moving forward. You know what to do better the next time.

But yeah, after putting all that work into something, who wants to see it get ripped apart?
