Yay! Another Stargate Secret! And I completely agree with you.

Also, criticism is just NOT done. I don't even leave comments anymore for fear of offending.

Not in this fandom, but... that last part, yeah. I originally wrote original fiction, and people are a lot freer with concrit in that world. When I got into fandom, I would say "I love ____ about your story, but ____ part is pretty implausible to me and pulled me out of things a bit. Maybe if you ____?"

But I soon realized even that (which was mild on my former planet) was often taken to mean "U GARBAGEZ U KAN'T RITE RAAAAAAAAAAREKDJSLK!" or something.

The thing is, when fan fiction is out there, it's done. Aside from fixing minor typos, odds are extremely high it's not going to be revised. It has, in essence, been put out for publication. Telling an author "if you changed this part of a story, it would work better" does no good for a fic author, because the story is done, and they probably won't be telling that story again. This is in contrast to original fic, where posting it online is often not its final publication, and specific critiques of the story can, in fact, be used to improve the story.

I revise constantly. I'd love a very thorough beta, but sadly the few people I know who actually do that beta rarely, because really doing it is a lot of painstaking work. So I put things up, but months later notice awkward wording or weird inconsistencies in the story and fix them. Personally, I feel there's no point in leaving something up that I know is of low quality.

I have so many stories that it's hard to get around to revising them all, though. One of these days on a long weekend I'm going to go through everything.

DA, that's great and all but that's *you*. Not everyone in fandom has that stance, nor should you expect everyone to follow your standards. Does that mean that a lot of fanfiction slips through the cracks with flaws that could be fixed? Yes, but it's never going to be published [most of it anyways] and the majority of people in fandom don't want to put that level of effort into something that's never going to 'see the light of day' as it were.

Giving concrit doesn't mean expecting the author to revise though. It shows that you're engaged with the story enough to care about it. It doesn't mean the author has to do anything -- or agree with your views.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Thing is, that's how a lot of concrit comes off, at least to the author, particularly if it's phrased 'If you change this...'. I'm not saying I agree with it, or that I think it's a good thing - as far as people growing as writers I think taking it that way does more harm than good.

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
That's a perfectly valid opinion. I just don't happen to agree :-) and wish fandom were a little less of a... I was going to say hugcircle, but it's not even that. It's that it seems to me that with fandom you either get glowing praises to the moon and stars or vitriolic wank with possible trolling. I wish people could express more ambivalence; I think it's a bit of a pathological Idealization Or Scorn thing.

Telling an author "if you changed this part of a story, it would work better" does no good for a fic author, because the story is done, and they probably won't be telling that story again.

On one side, I agree. Once it's done and posted that's it and comments aren't going to change or help the story. But if I were writing a lot of fic, and I was making the same mistakes over and over, sometimes it would be nice to know so I could improve. Critiques aren't necessarily useful for the critiqued work, but they are useful when moving forward. You know what to do better the next time.

But yeah, after putting all that work into something, who wants to see it get ripped apart?
