Art like this is the reason why I could never get into yaoi manga. Well, that and the unoriginal plots and the vague as hell porn.

That being said, I have come across some highly original, hot, and well drawn yaoi manga in the past. It's just so hard to find that when I want yaoi, I stick to doujinshi of a series I like. At least then I'm already invested in the characters (and the porn tends to be dirtier, lol).

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
..What? I thought doujins had shittier drawing styles though.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Depends. A lot of the djka in my fandoms, especially the BNFs, are pros IRL.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
I was only speaking of my personal experience, of course. Gyakuten Saiban fandom has tons of really talented artists in in, as well as some of the kinkiest people I've ever met. From what I've seen, Hetalia fandom has some really beautiful doujinshi, too.

List of some BL manga with decent plots and nice art (IMHO):

http://www.mangafox.com/manga/sorenari_ni_shinken_nandesu/
http://www.mangafox.com/manga/sono_te_no_netsu_wo_kasanete/
http://www.mangafox.com/manga/suteneko_no_karute/
http://www.mangafox.com/manga/saa_koi_ni_ochitamae/
http://www.mangafox.com/manga/home_tutor/
http://www.mangafox.com/manga/yume_musubi_koi_musubi/
http://www.mangarush.com/manga/bukiyou-na-silent/

I'm willing to forgive bad art sooner than I am a bad story, though, and while SH and JR are so far from perfect it isn't even funny, I still can't help being drawn to some of the characters and their relationships.

Eh these all have that "generic BL look" to them though

Now here's a person who's serious about her dude love! Thanks for all the recs!

[identity profile] ikkiuchi.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I personally liked Youka Nitta's Haru wo Daiteita, but...erm. Considering how she traced some of the panels and such, I feel kinda iffy about rec'ing it for its art.

Oh well. I still think it looks pretty.

Kou Yoneda... come back to the doujinka world.... ;_________;

I will kill anyone for a Tiger & Bunny doujin from her... She did fanart of it though...

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I'll check this out later (I don't have an internet connection in my home at the moment... I have to make due with brief visits to cafes).

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
What? I understand shoujo but BL is known to have pretty diversified styles, especially in the last 10 or so years, consider a lot of BL artists started (and some still are, depending on their contracts at the time) as doujinkas. As much people hate Shungiku Nakamura's art, her style is pretty distinctive (although she used to draw less angular but more generic in her much earlier stuff). BL has gotten to the point.

As for the anatomy stuff, that stuff plagues in the entirely of manga period, a lot of mangaka never had classical training and/or, more and more these days, done time as an assistant to a pro (although being an assistant doesn't necessarily improve your art). Manga is a lot less rigid about anatomy than American comic industry for example.

*point that it's easy to pick an mangaka out. *entirety

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
fix'd.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure you're completely right about the matter. Truth is I'm not much of a yaoi person (although I really loved it when I was in high school) so I haven't done much research on the genre. I picked up a few yaoi manga from my local bookstore a few years back (right when they first started carrying it), and I was less than impressed. All of the books seemed similar in that they were bland with cliched plots, vague porn, and generic characters. I'm sure that the art shown in the secret is very unique, but to my untrained eyes it looks like tons of BL stuff I've seen before.

Note that I'm not saying that all yaoi is like that. My bookstore probably just didn't have a very good selection, or perhaps the material was indeed good and it simply was not to my taste.

Oh, and when it comes to porn, I'm a lot less forgiving when it comes to wonky anatomy.
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (driving lessons)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I haven't read much BL recently but these are two that recently caught my interest because of the art

Warning! Whispers of Love (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=46279)

Seven Days (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=15017)

I haven't even been looking that hard for new manga to read. I've been kind of out of the manga loop for awhile really

[identity profile] ensuing.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my goodness, the art on those, especially the first one looks so wonderful.

Aaaaannnnd throwing in my 2 cents on BL I enjoy, anything by Naono Bohra (http://www.mangaupdates.com/authors.html?id=744) I pretty much eat up. I like her style (though it not ~*super fantastically different*~ than other BL artists), but mostly I love that she does a lot of stuff with adult and older guys, not just cutesy blushing high schoolers. …though she does those too sometimes...

Seconding Seven Days! Really nice stuff. I'm going to have to check out the first one you linked as well. :D

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the links! The art on both of those look really good.

[identity profile] hunterwithcause.livejournal.com 2011-09-16 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
Thirding the Seven Days love! <333

[identity profile] ontogenesis.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Have you read "Viewfinder"? Dirty as heck (graphic) and S&M, but the plots are actually pretty interesting, and the artwork is spot-on.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'll look it up!

Dang, I never imagined I'd be getting so many recs. Must be my lucky day!

Wanna share those highly original, hot, and well drawn yaoi manga? I'm always looking for more to read :)

That said, BL mangas I love and are well drawn IMO include:

Mede Shireru Yoru No Junjou (http://www.mangafox.com/manga/mede_shireru_yoru_no_junjou/)

Ano Kado Wo Magatta Tokoro (http://www.mangafox.com/manga/ano_kado_wo_magatta_tokoro/) <== One of my favourite mangas, ever. <333

Tea for Two (http://www.mangafox.com/manga/koicha_no_osahou_tea_for_two/) The prequel to Yume Musubi, Koi Musubi which has been recced upthread. I actually prefer Tea for Two, but YMMV.

Seven Days (http://manga.animea.net/seven-days.html) It's already been recced upthread somewhere, but it bears reccing again. Plus, the art is vastly different from the secret ;)
