tbh I think the whole film was poorly written.

well it's a comic book movie, what do you expect?

Don't worry, I wasn't expecting much from it :P

I don't really think so. He wasn't written exactly as I would have wanted Loki to be written, but just because I would have preferred a little more mischief/a little less emo doesn't mean I think they did an overall bad job.

The deleted scenes added more, but I won't say outright that they should have been included because I think they would have made his characterization even more murky. Sometimes it's hard to figure out what they want us to think Loki's intentions were.

Director says Loki does love Thor and is not preternaturally disposed to evil, but his love for pranks and mischief making makes him dangerous, and that, like Laufey, he's skilled at playing people.

I have no idea how that's supposed to be obvious from the movie, but that's what he said in the commentary!

Yeah, I don't know. Loki is kind of a mess of conflicting levels of sincerity and insincerity. It's obvious that Loki goads Thor into riding off to Jotunheim, but it's not obvious whether Loki intends for Thor to actually stand down and return home with his tail between his legs or to do exactly what Thor did and start a bloody battle.

There's the deleted scene before the coronation. He's all "I've been looking forward to this day as long as you" which might be true, insofar as he means ruining it. So that's insincere, even if it's true. But then he's like "ilu bro" and I think we're supposed to take that sincerely. But if he sincerely loves Thor, jealousy or not, his behavior towards him later is hard to excuse if he's not predisposed to evil.

I've heard what the director and actor say, and I have a pretty good handle on what I think his motivations are, but there is a lot of murkiness. So I get the secret saying he's badly written, even if there's something holding me back from agreeing 100%. Maybe I just like that I have to question so much, when the character is supposed to be a trickster.

I think that the fact that you rarely know what's going on with him is interesting. For me anyway, it added depth.

This, exactly. You're not supposed to know what's going on with trickster characters. You can't predict how they'll react/what they'll do next/whose side they are on at which time and why.

I so agree! He was incredibly inconsistent. I couldn't figure out whether he was an angsty!villain, a misguided!villain, or just an evil!villain. It seemed like every scene he was in, he had a different personality and different motivations. And then the ending with him made *no* sense whatsoever.

The fact that he's going to be the villain in the Avengers has made me way less interested in seeing that when it comes out.

This. But then, I laughed hysterically all the way through this film because of the hamfisted acting and the terrible romantic chemistry. Loki was arguably the most enjoyable thing in it, but that doesn't mean very much when, as you said, his motivations and approaches kept changing every two minutes.

Oh god. The Avengers. The more I hear about it, the more it sounds like an incoming fiasco, to be juggling so much expectation and canon.

By the standards set by the movie he appeared in, and other movies of its ilk, I'd say he's a damn fine character.

Why is it not okay to love the comic book movie genre? Does no one love adventure-related movies? Was I born in the wrong era, where only arthouse films count as "good?"

Amen to this. I was incredibly disappointed with Loki's character. I wanted the infamous God of Mischief, not this pathetic woobie!

I liked Loki a lot, but I wish we could have seen more of the God of Mischief side of his character. I don't read Thor comics, but the mythological Loki is one of my favorite gods ever because -- before he starts seriously messing around and causing Ragnarok -- he's basically the god of being a giant dick to everybody and it's amazing. Anyone who hasn't read Lokasenna or Þrymskviða needs to right now.

YES that's why I love him so much lol. But I did think they did a good job with making it so you couldn't really tell wtf was going on in his head till after everything was done.
