Rowling put plenty of characters in the 'wrong' houses. No one will ever convince me that Hermione shouldn't have been in Ravenclaw, and Percy Weasley was as Slytherin as they come.

On re-reading, I always found a strong "I'm a Gryffindor, not a Ravenclaw" subtext to Hermione's speech at the end of Philosopher's Stone when Harry has to go on alone. About bravery being more important than cleverness. I do think Ravenclaw!Hermione would be an interesting AU character to explore, though.

Don't want to piss of self-identified Ravenclaws, but I never saw Ravenclaw as the "smart House". There's nothing in canon, really, to indicate that it is, other than the fact that Rowena's diadem was made to increase the intelligence of the wearer. They were ALL intelligent. And if you look at the history of the houses, Gryffindors and Slytherins seem to attract the highly intelligent, not Ravenclaw. Dumbledore, McGonagall, Hermione, the Marauders... all in Gryffindor. Tom Riddle, Bellatrix, Snape, Merlin, all Slytherin. Ravenclaw seemed to get the ones who prized intelligence, but often the smarted people don't think intelligence is the greatest gift you can have. Most geniuses value other traits far more than wit, like Dumbledore.

So I think Hermione makes perfect sense in Gryffindor. She was smart, but she valued bravery and chivalry above other things. I mean, she decided to revolutionize the Ministry instead of going into academia. She wanted to use her brains to achieve good in the world, to create a better society, and that's very Gryffindor.

I completely agree with this, except for...

Merlin? Really? I thought it was pretty obvious that Merlin didn't really go to Hogwarts and that the Slytherins were just pulling that out of their asses to impress the first years and look awesome all around -(nd try to distract from the fact that Voldemort infamously came from Slytherin), or at least, the Slytherins several generations back came up with it and eventually the newer generations started believing it.

If you read all the introductions, you can see that trying to impress the first years, no matter how much bullshit it takes, is a common theme.

I thought that at first too -- Merlin lived and died centuries before Hogwarts, after all.

But then I remembered: Isn't one of the myths about Merlin that he lived backwards? Maybe he was a child in the time Hogwarts was founded.

And then all the students and teachers freaked out when he kept shrinking year after year, becoming a toddler, then a baby, and finally, nothing.

D:> NO THAT'S TOO CREEPY.

Also, imagine child!Merlin going all "well, in MY times, we had to make our own wands; and we didn't have floo networks - we had to fly in our brooms everywhere. We didn't have any of them fancy cushioning charms, and on top of that we had to pick cloudy days to avoid being sighted by muggles, blah blah blah..." on everyone.

...Actually, that one is funny and balances out the creepiness. :)
