Nev is the most Gryffindor of all the Gryffindors! I will always think that he was more of a hero than Harry was.

[identity profile] hoopyfroodyford.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I love Neville, but... how? Harry gave up his childhood, his security, often his reputation and popularity, and in the end his entire life just because he thought it was right. Neville was a wonderful guy and he was immensely brave in DH, but c'mon... he didn't even do a fraction of what Harry did.

I think Harry gets far too much crap in fandom...

Unpopular opinion time

[identity profile] cyren-2132.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, Deathly Hallows happened and all of a sudden Neville looked about 40.

But I'm still very glad he got his moment.

Re: Unpopular opinion time

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this really that unpopular an opinion?

I mean, I don't think he looks 40, but of all the "kids", Matthew Lewis is the one who looks the most ridiculous pretending to be a 17-year-old.

(OTOH, when he's dressed in his own clothes and acting his actual age, I think the actor's actually kind of hot.)

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Rowling put plenty of characters in the 'wrong' houses. No one will ever convince me that Hermione shouldn't have been in Ravenclaw, and Percy Weasley was as Slytherin as they come.

[identity profile] szaleniec1000.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
On re-reading, I always found a strong "I'm a Gryffindor, not a Ravenclaw" subtext to Hermione's speech at the end of Philosopher's Stone when Harry has to go on alone. About bravery being more important than cleverness. I do think Ravenclaw!Hermione would be an interesting AU character to explore, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't want to piss of self-identified Ravenclaws, but I never saw Ravenclaw as the "smart House". There's nothing in canon, really, to indicate that it is, other than the fact that Rowena's diadem was made to increase the intelligence of the wearer. They were ALL intelligent. And if you look at the history of the houses, Gryffindors and Slytherins seem to attract the highly intelligent, not Ravenclaw. Dumbledore, McGonagall, Hermione, the Marauders... all in Gryffindor. Tom Riddle, Bellatrix, Snape, Merlin, all Slytherin. Ravenclaw seemed to get the ones who prized intelligence, but often the smarted people don't think intelligence is the greatest gift you can have. Most geniuses value other traits far more than wit, like Dumbledore.

So I think Hermione makes perfect sense in Gryffindor. She was smart, but she valued bravery and chivalry above other things. I mean, she decided to revolutionize the Ministry instead of going into academia. She wanted to use her brains to achieve good in the world, to create a better society, and that's very Gryffindor.

Neville is never not awesome. He's been completely Gryffindor since Philosopher's Stone, imo.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Hell yeah! He stood up to the trio when no one else would.

[identity profile] szaleniec1000.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Just like with Hermione, we see evidence of his Gryffindor nature at the end of that book. "It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends" indeed.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-09-19 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed

[identity profile] captain-loki.livejournal.com 2011-09-19 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

Obvs standing up to his friends, but also refusing point blank to let Harry go on alone during OotP, *and* also everything he does that year at Hogwarts...

Just because we follow Harry around as he looks for horcruxes and faces danger, doesn't mean others weren't facing equal amounts of danger themselves...

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
What? No. His standing up to the trio in PS proves that he has courage. He may have more fear than most, but if anything that makes his getting past his fear and being brave all that much more impressive. Yes, he comes into his own in DH, but he was always an awesome Gryffindor.

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Really?? Not even standing up to the trio in PS? I thought that was the first sign of his hidden badassery.. and apparently Dumbledore did too.

[identity profile] dark-puck.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing you didn't read the first book, Anon.

[identity profile] checkerbloom.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
He was more of a Gryffindor than Harry, Hermione or Ron.

[identity profile] lsirial.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It may just be my headcanon, but I'd say he didn't consider himself a true Gryffindor before the 7th year either...
(one more reason to love him, it feels so great to watch someone gain confidence!)

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-09-19 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
wow, rude

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-09-19 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Uh

"And finally, it takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends. I award ten points to Neville Longbottom!

Right

(Anonymous) 2011-09-19 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I blame the constraints of keeping Harry as the POV character. Neville's badassery came in a big part from enduring and trying to be brave despite being put down by everyone (most importantly, his remaining relatives, who played a big role in how his personality came out). Harry mostly paid attention to Neville peripherally or to cheer him up, and it shows.

Awwww. I love Neville nd thought there were hints of his bravery from back in the first book. BUT STILL, HIS PART IN DH = <33333333333333333333333333333

toplessrobot did a list once (csb to come) of nerd characters who will totally kick your ass, and I've always remembered the way they described Neville's big Samuel L Jackson moment in DH because it's the most accurate thing ever: "A SOARING ARIA OF BADASSERY". HELL yes.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-19 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously? Neville's bravery has been pretty damn obvious throughout the series. Trying to stop the trio from losing Gryffindor any more points, getting into a scrap with Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle at a Quidditch game. I mean, he knew he wasn't as talented as some of the other students, but he was still giving it his all in the DA, he still went with them to the Ministry in OotP and fought for what he believed in.

Look at his homelife. His grandmother is overbearing, his family fussed over the possibility of him being a Squib, his confidence was constantly squashed. And yet he still tries his best and won't give up. We all know what happened to his parents, and he's not ashamed of his situation but he still doesn't want people taking it easy on him because of that, he wants to be seen as his own person. Bravery isn't always about throwing yourself in the line of fire (although Neville did his fair share of that too).

If it's not obvious, I think Neville is exceptionally brave.
