They've co-opted a fictional racial slur and are using it as an actual real-world insult? What the hell is wrong with them? Tell me its ignorance. Tell me they don't actually know what they're saying. Not that that's much of an excuse anyway. People can call me humourless and oversensitive, but I'm fucking appalled by that.

*eyeroll* It was an analogy. Most of the entire canon of literature is analogies, you know. But it was a reference to something very ugly and yes, real. I can't believe some people have managed to miss the point of it so completely.

I highly doubt there is anyone in the world over the age of say 12 who could read HP and not get that it was an analogy. That doesn't mean it's actually insulting IRL to call someone a mudblood. Since wizards don't actually exist.

Every word can be insulting if you're using them as an insult, like dirty melon. But it's stupid being so upset because some people are using "muddy" as a silly insult. There's fighting against prejudices and there's making a complete fool of oneself.

If people were using "muddy" to refer to real-world people of mixed race of ethnicity, I'd be all for stamping it out. But if you're legitimately upset about a slur towards muggle-born wizards, you are ridiculously misplaced priorities and probably too much time on your hands. Spend your time worrying about things that actually hurt people in the real world.

Of course I don't care about fictional characters. I care about the real-world people that those fictional characters represent. I don't think those college students mean any malice by it, but I'm bothered that they don't know, or don't care about, the context that the word was used in. They have failed to draw the parallel between Rowling's fictionalised blood-racism and our own real-world prejudice.
